VANOS and timing help

I just joined. If I need to be somewhere else maybe someone can direct me. I have a 2009 mini clubman. When I bought it someone else had tore the motor down. Had the head repaired and now putting it back together. The Variable Valve Lift Eccentric Shaft Actuator and the sensor had been removed. I need to reinstall them but want to be sure I do it correctly. Have looked on here, Google and you tube and have not found any detailed instructions. Wondering if someone has the info I need or can direct me where to find it. Also how critical is sitting the timing. Replaced the timing chain and the guy that did it used the clamps to lock everything in place but did not use a digital protractor. TIA

You need a shop manual. Proper way to do timing is with the locking tool. Rotate it manually a few times and the tool should drop back on.

Technical manuals are online. https://www.newtis.info/

"The guy" did it incorrectly. You can't "clamp" the crank. There is a pin you insert to lock the crank, and there are machined tools that lock the inlet and the exhaust camshafts. Don't start that engine until you verify the timing is perfect. It's very critical. Contrary to what I've heard some say, the MINI IS an interference engine. Get the timing wrong and you will bend valves.

And if you need illustrated parts breakdown, go to realoem.com, and you'll find most of what you need. I use that site more than any else source for info and purchases.
