My wife bought me a Sirius plug n play unit for my b-day and I am looking for ideas on where to install it. It is slightly bulky and won't fit too well under the toggle switches. Any other ideas or better yet pics. Right now it is sitting under the ebrake which makes it tough to use.

You need to find a Panavise holder for the Mini. I had one in my Passat and it worked great! I've already ordered my new holder for the Mini...but I'm still waiting for my car to arrive!

Oh, and yes. Sirius kicks butt!

 

I have the same Panavise mount - got it from a guy on ebay, but probably some of your local stereo shops can get it for you too...

I use mine for my phone or my FRS radio...

 

I had Sound Advice make a bracket and it screwed into the spot that the new cup holder scres into. Looks great and is easy to read and use. They painted it to match.

 

What is sound advice? Is that a local store for you or do they have a website?

I have this in my VW and attached my JVC Sirius unit with velcro. When I get my MINI, I'll go this route as well.

 

Its called tweeter in some parts of the country. But many Circuit City stores can do the same thing.

Thanks everyone. Will that panavise that is pictured in Vedubauman's post allow use of the glove box? And how does it attach? It looks like you first remove the radio and maybe attach the fixture to the side. Am I remotely correct.

I believe it's designed so that you can still open the glove box. I'll let you know soon. Yes, you will need to remove the stereo to mount the bracket. It's a very easy installation.

Another option is the XM cupholder holder. I'm trying to see if there is any way to use it with a Sirius unit. It's also cheaper than the Panavise.

Just received my new Mini over the weekend. The first installation was the Sirius radio. I ran into a problem. My pnp JVC unit is WAAAY to large to work with the Panavise holder and the glove box. I'm opting to buy the new JVC unit that is about half the size of my current unit. Taking measurements at lunch to make sure it will work. Stay tuned.

 

I just installed my Sportster pnp unit. I too was afraid of the Panavise and the size of the unit. Instead I used the auto cradle bracket that came with my system and attached it to the "knee bolster" (is that what the piece is called just under the steering wheel). The unit is just to the left of the radio, under the ignition and I am able to view the unit "thru" the steering wheel. The bottons are very accesible and once I order the aux input jack to run the Sirius through the radio, the MFSW controls will function.

I took some pictures, but since my digital is broke I still have to get them developed. I'll then scan and place them here, hopefully in the next day or two.

I wanted to use only the 3m adhesive, but the contraption was just too heavy, so unfortunately I had to use a couple of screws into the knee bolster for added support. My MINI wasn't too happy about the surgery but is healing nicely. Pics are on the way.

It still needs a little tweaking, but overall works very well...

 

I too got a Roadster for Christmas. The install was a bit of a pain. here are the details (sorry no photos yet):

I set the exterior intenna next to the factory intenna, ran the wiring under the open boot, pulled out the rubber gasket for the factory intenna and ran the wire through that opening, going on top of the interior roof panel. Careful pulling down the interior as I pulled the velcro connector off (had to glue it back on. Fed the wire through and down the boot exterior gasket, along the boot interior to under the back seats. From there, the intenna wire runs along the gasket on the driver's side all the way to the console.

As for mounting, I relunctantly removed the cup holder on the right side. Here I purchased an ultimount mounting from Crutchfield. Using crutchfield's hardware I mounted the docking station to it. The only problems:

1. The crutchfield mounting blocked the intenna jack's plug. I used a power drill to carefully drill out two holes and then using a metal file, filed out the edges so the intenna jack could fit past the mounting to the plug.

2. The adhesive is not the best, so I mounted the ultimount arm with the ball swivel only on the right dashboard column, then used bungy cords wrapped around it as tight a possible, then wrapped the bungy cords around the gear shifter with the shifter in 6th gear and left it overnight to set.

Now I know this may sound complicated and I apoligize for not taking photos as I went along. Hopefully my detailed description helps. Email me at cimac@turfres.com if you need any questions answered-- maybe I can get in there and take some photos for you.

I just installed my Sirius PNP3 and it looks fantastic! However, my terr (repeater) signal is at 10 out of 10, whereas my sat signal flashes between 0 and 3 (out of 10). This doesn't sound too good.

The manual states that this antenna strength screen is for antenna positioning for the home, so i have a glimmer of hope here for a functioning antenna. If this is atypical, then most likely I have a damaged antenna?

What are your signal strengths?

I was sent the wrong Panavise holder!! I no longer have a problem with my JVC pnp and Panavise and the glove box! Still thinking about ordering the newer smaller JVC unit. Too big in comparison to the rest of the interior.

 

Mine generally sits @ 8-10 on the Sat. signal. Repeater signal varies greatly. Sounds like the antenna is damaged. Which unit do you have and where is the antenna mounted?

 

It turns out that if you are receiving a strong terr signal, then the receiver is most likely upping the gain on the sat signal, and it is not uncommon to find an inverse relationship between the 2 signals. On my to work this morning, I found that as I distanced myself from the repeater, my sat signal gradually "improved" to between 7 and 10 bars.... These are quite common findings I am told.

 

Hey all. I got the Audiovox unit sight-unseen directly from Sirius. I want to get the OEM sat antenna installed so that I don't have two antennas on my roof. I am having trouble figuring out where to install the receiver inside the car. I wanted to mount it under the toggles, but it is way too large for that. I don't know how the Audiovox unit's size compares to that of the other options. I have read this thread, but I was hoping some of you could post some photos of where you have the unit installed. Thanks.

How did you mount it? How did you plug it in with the cradle sitting right on top of the lighter socket like that?

 

I mounted it with the included 3M sticky mount attached the surface directly beneath the toggle bank. This allows for just enough clearance above the lighter to avoid bumping into it. To power it, I installed a 'switched' power outlet in the parcel shelf.
