Crank angle sensor seal replacement w/o service mode

Is it possible to get at the sensor w/o putting the car in service mode (r53)? I am seeing these two vids for reference.

Possible? Perhaps, but I can’t imagine doing that. I replaced mine last summer and it was hard enough to do reaching in there in service mode.....it’s tight and you can’t really see it well from above.

putting the car in service mode really isn’t all that bad/hard. Get some long bolts and follow ModMinis instructions.

+1 on Fastlane -- once you do service mode for the first time, it becomes very easy the second time. Shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes and your access is vastly improved.

Yep, once you’ve done the service mode a few times, it goes quickly.

I definitely wouldn’t advise replacing the crank sensor seal blindly. There is a ton of gunk near that sensor and the last thing you want to do is shove that dirt into your motor while you fiddle with it.

I followed this how-to to replace the o-ring without service mode.

Definitely seems easier to me to just go into semi-FES mode. You don't need to drain or remove the radiator to get the proper clearance if you aren't afraid of removing the supercharger inlet tube. Once done a couple times, it's easier as a starting point. Also doesn't require much time under the car, which to me is a bonus.

I have very narrow hands, and I did it 100% blind without removing a single thing from the car. That said, it was challenging and took about 45 minutes and my hands were very chewed-up afterwards.

That's pretty impressive! I personally find the process of the tear down to be quite meditative. I could never get my hand jammed in like that without serious injury.
