2003 S Supercharger 36k Abby or normal noise?

Hopefully I did this correctly and you can hear/see the video. I purchased a 16 year old R53 S with 36,500 miles and I was going to drain and fill the supercharger among other things. So rotating the pulley back and forth one hears a slight ticking sound. Normal or......what?

Since you have it that far apart go ahead and service it. I just had one that had 48k and it was almost empty. So add some life to it.

Yes, I had stated that I was going to change the oil in the supercharger. My question again was: is that noise while turning the supercharger pulley back-and-forth a normal click or abnormal. In other words what does that click tell those of you who have a lot of experience with superchargers? Thanks, Brian

Super low mile find!

The supercharger Sounds like the 236K one we took off. Normal.

Like Way said and you confirmed, refresh the oil in both chambers and have fun with your new toy.

I think the click you hear is the sound where the PTO engages the water pump. There is deliberately some play between the output of the SC and the input of the water pump, and if you rock the SC back and forth, you will hear a click, and that is not abnormal. At least in my experience.

This is a video that I made for a supercharger PTO gears that are near pristine. The click and slop is the amount of the PTO gears' backlash which is normal.

Thank you both! Excellent information! So is the replacement supercharger oil jury still out? Seemed to me that the argument is between the stock Eaton 45 replacement by GM or the GP 2380 Turbo oil?

I am sure most R52/R53 went with GM supercharger oil. BMW f**** up and claimed the SC oil is life time, not to mention it and Eaton both f*** up with the PTO and bearing and seal design, let alone the serviceability. I would cut BMW some slack due to the difficulty of the Gen 1 Mini engine bay packaging though.

GM Supercharger Oil. 12345982. Buy two tiny little bottles for about $35-40. I was tempted to use what I had on hand, Redline 75w-90 gear oil, but the wisdom of the forum guided me to get the right oil for the job. Glad I did as it's a fair bit of work getting that blower wrangled out off the motor.
