Check gas cap

Light always comes on so I bought a new cap and it still comes on. Car will shut off when I'm stopped with clutch pressed in. Car will stumble while in neutral idling. Will occasionally idle around 2k rpm. No check engine light.

What should I check for?

Thanks in advance

I can pretty much guarantee that the gas cap is not your problem......sounds like your evap system has either failed or has a large leak somewhere in the lines

Find a shop that can check and clear codes on a MINI, and also find a shop that can do a smoke test on the evap system

Also, my girlfriend and I both heard beeping outside the car near the passenger rear.

Agreed. I had a monster leak when my MAP sensor tube broke off the MAP sensor. Caused similar running issues.

Spray some carb/choke cleaner around your intake connections and you might find the leak source of the leak.

+1 check the leaks, and I had the wires corrode back by the leak diagnosis pump which is on the rear passenger side. Had a evap code from the schwaben scan tool. Did you scan it yet?

That definitely sounds like a leak to me! I would do as Derek said, time to brake out the carb/choke spray!

Check engine light has not come on at all. I will get some carb spray and see if I find anything. I'll also get her up In The air and check around the evap canister/pump.

Is there anything to this beeping noise at the back of the car? What would make a noise that I can hear outside the passenger rear? Girlfriend said when she came out this morning while I was parked idling, that she could hear it.

Only beeping noise i here is when my PDC sensor kick on when i start the car, that's all i can think of that a beeping noise. Sensor speaker is in the rear back panel on the interior. If you dont have the factory PDC then no beep. I was thinking the other noise is the low bump noise from the tank expanding on the straps from the pump kicking on in the back to relieve the pressure. Also, you can hear this when you fill your MINI up with gas and you are just about full.

Is it truly an electronic beep or a mechanical sound that sounds electronic? Could be related to fuel pump. Remove your rear seat and listen there.

Are you sure its a beep and not more of a whistle coming from a vacuum leak?

Couldn't get it to idle funny by spraying carb cleaner. I looked back by the canister and everything looks good. I'll inspect that further when I can pull it in the garage.

Car shut off twice while sitting there. I can't believe I'm not getting a check engine light...

Here's the video. Definitely sounds like air escaping a pin hole or something.

Sounds like a leak to me. It sounds like it’s being caused by a rhythmic cycling of a pump.

Not everything produces a light. I assume you have checked for codes? You did say you had the gas cap warning. I would look towards the leak diagnosing pump as ECS suggested.

My guess from listening to the video is that the noise is the Parking Detection sensor beeper.
Is the car close to something?
Is somebody standing behind the car?
Is a sensor 'stuck' or obstructed in some manner?
I think the sensors are behind 2 little round circles in the back bumper - I have no idea where the actual beeper is.
Try it in the middle of a big car park with nothing around it!

Going back to your original post, exactly which light is coming on?

Sounds nothing like my PDS. The alarm is inside the dash.

There may not be a check engine light.....not every emissions item will throw a code right away.....some may take a few times to tell the ECM to turn the light on....also, a lot of emission items will not throw a code on the car unless certain criteria are met, like engine at operating temp, car moving above a certain MPH or RPM.....or how full the gas tank is....most cars will not throw an EVAP code if the tank is more than 3/4 full or less than 1/4 full......

My '06 R52 has the rear park sensors.....I thought the "sound" came from the right rear speaker.....I could be wrong on that.....

Again, I still say you have an EVAP issue, maybe a leak detection pump, broken or cracked line somewhere from the tank to the engine.....reason I am saying this is the car (or someone) thinks the gas cap is bad.....because the fuel tank system will not hold pressure, so it tell the ECM to turn on the gas cap light (mainly because people are stupid and either leave the gas cap at the pump and drive off, or not tighten it all the way) ....there will not be a "light" on the dash telling you that you have an EVAP line leak other than the check engine light, if it comes on at all

I bet your system has a leak, and the engine is sucking vacuum through that "leak" and that's why it's running bad.....

The only way to find the leak is to have the system "smoke tested".......or, just keep guessing and throwing parts at it hoping for a fix
