Axle

How do I remove the drivers side axle? Do I need to remove the boot in order to do this?

The rubber boots? No.

After removing the axle nut, disconnecting the control arm and lower ball joints & tie-rod from the hub, swing the entire knuckle assembly outward until the splined shaft of the axle slides pulls out of the hub, making sure you have first supported it so it does not drop. Then from underneath, you'll need a longish pry-bar to "pop" it out of the gearbox, as unlike the passenger side which just slides out, it is retained in by a circlip.

Mod MINI's video on a clutch replacement shows the "popping out" method for the driver side axle at 22:43 of this video:

I’m already there, nothing in the wheel well but a brake caliper suspended by bungy. Yeah I’m looking for that clip.

The circlip is inside, permanently attached to the end of the inboard axle splined shaft. It snaps into place, when the axle is pressed into the gearbox, retaining it.

That’s why the axle needs to be ‘popped’ out.

MODmini must of seen my thread He just released this vid today

He’s using aftermarket axles that he said are pretty good which contradicts all that I’ve heard. I already spent a grand on the new axles so can’t go back down that road
