R50/53 05 xenons with aftermarket kit
05 xenons with aftermarket kit
I am sorry, I am sure this question has been asked 100000 times. But I am too dumb to find the answer i am looking for using the search... my question is this: I drive an 04 cooper s with halogen lights. i have a line on a nice set of 05 projectors xenons for a damn good price. no wiring, ballasts, ect. just the lights themselves. can I use an aftermarket hid kit in these? or would I be better off buying a decent set of aftermarket projector headlights with an hid kit? like i said i am sorry i couldnt find this answer i have spent a lot of time looking...
thanks in advance!

Wish I could help. Here’s a thread that might help. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...eadlights.html
Like stated on that other thread…linked above
The Mini's Xenon Headlight also include Headlight Washers (which don't have to be installed) and a Self Leveling Low beam (the Xenon Hid) with a ballast (original around $300-$500) and Igniter (Original around $120) which use a D2S bulb (a bulb designed for a Projector and external igniter) and a HIgh Beam (Halogen AFAIK H9). As you can see the prices to keep these original can be expensive, same reason I need to go aftermarket, or just buy the whole assembly for about $650 each!
Now, the self Leveling part of this Headlight would need a sensor in the Front Right Upper control arm and another sensor in the Left Rear Upper Control arm and wiring, not sure if the 02 model has this ready might need to retro fit.
This self leveling would need to be activated (programed) in you computer (I think DIS GT1 or SSS Program can do this).
Now as far as rewiring them, I'm in the middle of doing just that to my 06 Xenon headlights, I'm also missing my Ballast and igniters and some wiring was changed to use LED's instead of Xenon.
I might go the way of DDMTuning or OPT7 (waiting to see if OPT7 has any D2S kits), Since these lights might also have some type of comunicación with your computer, a CanBus compatible HID Kit could be used to rewire the Low Beam Xenon part, but without the Self Leveling activated don't really know if you might be able to adjust them manually and hope they stay aligned (disconnect the leveling motor). Most HID upgrade kits are not CanBus compatible and you might get some error codes (really don't know), they do sell various accessories to prevent these codes but I guess the CanBus compatible kit would just prevent having to purchase those extra parts.
I was thinking of something like this kit (DDM Ships from CHINA!) https://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/UltraCanbusHID
Remember when ordering an HID KIT, the type of bulb you will order with it...
the 05 Xenon Headlight uses a D2S that's meant for a PROJECTOR and a remote igniter (even though igniter will go on top of bulb, its a separate piece), a D2R is a Xenon Bulb meant for a REFLECTOR and it cuts the light in the bulb, a D1S is like the D2S but the bulb has the igniter built in to its base, there are many other types of bulbs. I would stay with the D2S for those 05 xenon Headlights. BTW to make things a bit more complicated, those 05 headlight come from several different fabricators making them a bit different from each other.

Having stated all that, there are Headlights that resemble the 05-06 style Xenon but maintain the Halogen bulbs and you could use a simple HID upgrade kit on those if necessary.
The Original MINI Xenon Lights went for about $800-$900 complete assembly ( with Ballast and igniter), ACSTUNING has them for $650 each...
If you visit acstunning you will find a sort of headlights that resemble the original MINI Xenons, Some with refelctors others with projectos, while using LED or Halogen Bulbs at around $200 each https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2002-...ng/Headlights/
So, to summarize my rant,
Will they fit?.. YES,
Will they self level?... NOT without some work,
Will the Self Level Motor Stay in alignment if disconnected?... I have no clue.
Can you rewire them with an aftermarket ballast?... I SURE HOPE SO
Remember: High Beams are Halogen, the ballast kit will not control these, I believe you must wire them apart, you could get creative here and use another HID KIT for the High beams? Just thinking out loud.
And that is all I know about that!
