Any way to get a standard iPhone cable to play audio?

I have a 2013 R56 S with Nav, and I like using the Y-cable for music so I can browse my library without picking up my phone. My 30-pin Y-cable died (used the 30-pin cable with Apple's adapter to lightning port), and I had tried BMW's new Y-cable to lightning (the updated cable) but the audio quality is garbage.

When I plug in my phone just using my Apple lightning cable, I get the album artwork and can browse my music but no audio.

My GF's dad has a 2011 3 series and can use his Apple cable for audio just fine.

I thought I read somewhere it has to do with MINI looking for analog audio instead of using digital audio, but is there a way to code it to use digital audio?

I rather not spend another $100 on a 30-pin Y-cable and have to use an adapter. Thanks!

Thanks Rich, my dad has one and it works really well. My MINI has factory BT audio streaming, which works great but I just like to be able to use the cable...
