Best way to fix this blemish?
Best way to fix this blemish?
I bought this 2011 JCW R57 2 weeks ago from the Nashville MINI dealer. I looked at it just a few hours after it was traded, while it was still dirty inside and out & test drove with the former owner’s plate still on! This blemish wasn’t at all visible and when I picked it up a few days later after being serviced & detailed by the dealer it was perfect.
However it threw a code for a failing O2 sensor on Monday & the dealer replaced it for free (yay) and washed it again as they always do after service. It was wet when I drove it home and didn’t see anything unusual. Yesterday I noticed this huge blemish in the sun & was shocked! All I can think is that the owner expertly covered it up, and either MINI of Nashville touched it up during the detail or the first wash didn’t reveal anything but the 2nd wash in 2 weeks did?
So my question is: what do? We polished it with about 4 coats of a cheap turtle wax product for black cars last night & that didn’t really do anything. What do I need, what are the steps?
Oh no, sorry I figured it would stick out like a sore thumb! That's a reflection I think. The blemish is the cloudy area right above the hood scoop. The pic is looking at the hood from the side. I think it's oxidation or maybe someone "polished" too hard & damaged the paint?

You could try to polish that area. If the residue on the polish rag/ polisher is black, then the clear coat is worn off there. Turtle wax is not polish, you need something that will lightly cut the paint.
Yeah, sorry but that’s no blemish.
That is not repairable with out painting the hood again. That was caused by someone buffing the hood too aggressively with a wool pad at high speed. It looks like they We’re trying to polish the edge of the scoop and burned the cleacoat and paint on the metal hood so bad I can see the gray factory primer underneath it.
It is really hard to judge from the angle of the picture. Try taking a few more pictures from closer and different angles. Take a picture from 2 feet up right above it with no flash but under some lights.

That's a bummer definitely if the hood needs to be repainted. I guess my next question is - since either the owner or dealer or both successfully covered it with something so that it was not visible and stayed that way through rain & 2 weeks of driving , what are my options for doing that in the meantime? It's my daily driver and if I can protect the area and make it look good between washings I'd be happy. Is there a tinted wax that works well or ???
I'd go back to the MINI dealer and tell them how unhappy you are with the obvious cover job on the damaged paint. It's one thing when a typical used car lot screws you over, but when it is the brands dealership then they should be concerned with reputation.

I'll get some hopefully when I'm done working. It's outside so all I can really do is take pictures under sunlight.

As for pictures without sun, try a mall parking garage if you have one local.
Honestly what I would do is what Minnie.the.Moocher said above and take it back to the dealership. At least give them a chance to ‘good will’ fix it.
