dme and dmlt pump questions

i had my 2012 countryman with the 1.6l basic motor in the dealership to check coolant leak and check engine light. I just got my quote for 11k in repairs. Not sure they are hosing me or not.

The in invoice said 2 hard faults stored for dmtl pump failure and intake vanos activator fault. The following codes were given to me.
Cf2d
e717
272b
287d

durung their diagnostics they said they found oil in my dme and body harness, dmtl pump failure and a stretched timing chain

I am curious is the dme not a sealed module? If so how would oil get into it where is the dme and the dmtl pump on the car?

I was was also told that my coolant leak was from the oil filter housing gasket leaking. Not sure how I only have coolant on the drive way not oil.

Any help understanfing Fing this would be appreciated as I not paying 11k for repairs on a 14k car.

Can an I get a dme from the wreckers and just plug it in or does it need to be programmed? Also would like to find out where the dme and dmtl pump are on the car as I can get a engine for about 2200 and want to make sure I have these 2 items.

Hi- I do not claim to be a Mini expert (I just own one). However I have worked on German cars exclusively and have been in the business well over 20 years so for what it's worth here is just my opinion (since you have no other replies).

The oil in the dme and harnesses comes from a "wicking" effect of a leaking engine sensor that shares the same wire harness. This has become somewhat common in various cars these days. For instance I had to change an oil solenoid sensor (with a small repair kit) on our All4 before oil wicked up high enough to do any damage.

Engine DME is a programmed unit. In my experience you will need a new one as it may store "Theft relevant" things like VIN#'s and mileage. That said nothing is impossible and someone more savvy than I perhaps could recommission a used one. They are sealed and sometimes can simply be cleaned at the connector. but....if this oil leak has truly been ongoing long enough to enter an additional body harness it is possible that it is literally filled with oil at this point.

All this said I do feel the estimate is high even with the timing chain.
I feel you need to find a good ISP outside of the dealer network that will give a more realistic number and repair vs. replace some items to keep costs down.

A replacement engine will not address oil in the body harness. That will have to get tended to as well.

where are you located?

the dealer is the NEVER/LAST place to go to.

There is no need for a new engine as all might have similar issues. I suggest taking the car to another shop/local shop that works in Minis/BMWs. get the leaks taken care of, clear codes, see what comes back.

also make sure the oil is at the correct level.

if the harness is indeed oily (which is hard for me to even imagine) then you can just buy another harness and swap it.
