Odd Trip Odometer Behavior -- Any Ideas?

So in a moment of being OCD, I decided to check my trip odometer against the vehicle odometer. I reset the trip odometer at the moment the vehicle odometer displays the "next" mile. Then... when the vehicle displays the "next" mile again, the trip odometer has registered +0.8 mile (not 1.0 mile). Then going one additional mile on the vehicle odometer, the trip odometer "catches" up and registers 2.0 miles at the appropriate time. Just to be clear, here are some specific numbers to illustrate:

Vehicle Odo Trip Odo
2000 0.0
2001 0.8
2002 2.0
2003 2.8
2004 4.0

I think (but am not 100% sure) that the vehicle odometer is more or less accurate.

Has anyone seen anything like this, or have an idea what might be going on?
(2018 CM JCW - November 2017 build - with about 2200 miles now. 19" wheels)

I've never heard of rounding for an odometer. In my previous car, an X3, the trip odometer was bang on.

Shouldn't an odo to be accurate?
