Coolant Leak and Owner Fail

TL;DR

DC was single digits at 5AM (my drive time.) Cut a piece of cardboard to fit between front bumper and A/C "radiator." Also, removed/replace a bunch of coolant with new 50/50. Much better and no leak in the AM.

So the name freeze plug is not ole wives tale after all?

You are not alone. I am a risk taker and I often will add water to the coolant instead of opening the tight wallet for the overpriced OEM precious liquid. I have a pretty good idea where the edge of the envelop is however.

Try Evans Waterless Coolant. It's expensive but it works well, is lifetime, and Jay Leno approves and uses it. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwjlr_X CgsTYAhXollQKHXXvDh0Qxa8BCCUwAA&usg=AOvVaw0VTJzWxr N8ZFOD4xbU2nov
