okay gang need some help here. i picked up my MC back in july and they could not find the card for the radio code. I am going to be doing some work this weekend on the car that requires completely disconnecting the battery. however, i have no radio code. my last car (VW jetta) requires you to enter the code each time the battery is disconnected or the radio is removed. Is it the same thing with the MC? i went to the dealership yesterday to have them pop the head unit to get the code for me but they refused stating "you dont need the code unless the radio gets taken out, the battery has nothing to do with it". is this true or am i getting lied to (again) by this dealer?

The dealer should (for free) pull your head unit, decipher the serial number on the back of the radio and enter it into their factory computer which should in a matter of 3-10 minutes return your radio code information. BMW has done this for me since at least 1988.

By the way, you are correct anytime you disconnect the battery the radio will display CODE and you must enter it in order for it to work again. Your dealer is not very sophistated.

Hey guys, I disconected my battery to install the Rally Lights and I did not have any problems with the Radio, it worked as soon as power was restored.

Took A quick look at my Mini file (paper I received upon purchase) and noted a little slip of paper with the word RADSCHRAUBENSICHERUNGSCODE followed by a number. This little slip would be easy to lose, or misplace. My seventh grade German class was a few years ago, but I am guessing this is the radio code. It would be good to know the exact parameters of when and how this code needs to used. The radio owners manual is not of much help. I would guess that when the battery is dis-connected, the radio will ask for code input before functioning. Always a good idea to disconnect the battery when performing any 'beneath the bonnet' work, so this would be something good to know. Needed only when the radio is removed????

Just so you know, I disconected the battery and reconnected it at least 10 different times while working on my Rally lights. It never asked for a code, nor did I lose the radio presets.

Hi DennisJ,

RADSCHRAUBENSICHERUNGSCODE = code for the security nut/bolt from your wheels.

What if you take out the original radio and hook up another factory unit for the car and then turn the car on. Now you remove that radio and install the original radio.....will you need the code? Where is the MINI's taint? I thought the radio would display the code.

You kind of dug up an old thread here. (2002)

The MINI radio has no code to plug in. This was misinformation. When you plug the radio in, it talks to the IBus to make sure that it can be used. I have swapped a radio out with another from Ebay with no problems. (Both OEM).

As said above, there's no code. I've done exactly as you described, and had no issues.

Bench test mode

I can confirm the same thing as to swapping out the head units. My new goal is to get the unit to the bench test mode. My understanding is that this can be done by changing from the Bus mode to the CODE mode.
