Hey guys, just found a great deal on a set of 16 inch factory R90 wheels. Was wondering if anyone was running 16 inch wheels on their beautiful coupes. If so, can anyone post some pics
I had 17's on my 02 ... those were included in an option package
in the day the 'justa had 15's as OE and the S 16's ..... as I recall .....
so far as the 'look' .... IME: when you went to the larger wheel, they installed a lower sidewall profile tire .... the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combination didn't change as much as you might envision and folks who did not understand what was going on complained about a hard ride ..... duh .... still happens today, every day. 16's allow a taller sidewall (even with run flats) and a taller sidewall means a 'softer' ride ... but your tire "picture" is less "cool" (wanna guess what a Caddie SUV on 21 inch rims and super low profile tires rides like. I expect they take detours to avoid speed bumps!!!!!)
Tire Rack has a tool that lets you play with your car and various wheel and tire combinations for looks ....
17" was an option on my car so 16" must be standard. I've heard that you get a somewhat "softer" ride with 16's which might be nice especially with the runflat tires. My wife comments that my car rides pretty harsh (but she drives a Honda Element).
I have to admit with 17" rft and also having the sport suspension option the ride is a bit harsh to say the least but if I do go 16" I plan on getting non run flat tires to go with it and keep the 17" for winter

Same here, it's a bit on the harsh side over bumps. I'm used to it though and it's sweet on smooth pavement.
I will probably replace the OEM tires with non run flats because there are more tread pattern choices and you do better get a better ride quality. I did that with my wife's 2012 Countryman and it made a huge difference in ride and you didn't feel like the car was leaving the pavement when hitting expansion joints on a curve😁
16" are pretty nice for the ride and we have a couple sets left of the 16" R90's on sale with free ship. We also found they fit the Cooper and Cooper S brakes. If you have JCW brakes or larger aftermarkets they will not fit. I had 16" and they do have a better ride than the 17". And you dont have to worry about curbing them or hitting bumps and bending a wheel with the larger sidewalls.
16" is the default size I believe. When I got the sport package on my previous R56, it bumped the wheels size to 17s. My R58 is the base model and came with 16s, which I will replace with 17s when the tires wear out.
If you have a harsh ride on 17s, it's the runflats, which are terrible vs standard tires. Two things I will never get on a Mini again:

Base models had 15" non run flats with a spare, Sport Package had 16" run flat with an option to move up to 17" wheels and run flats.
