I think they are called lariats, but don't hold me to that. Otherwise, when I worked for a large company where they issued badges to people, those would be called "badge straps."

Now I work for a 25 person company... Badges? We don't need no stinking badges

Oh, Advantage is right. I have heard those referred to as Lanyards before.

Maybe Advantage can clarify: What's the difference between a lanyard and a lariat?

Yeah, I think the term can be used a little more broadly...

Check this link that google gave me

And sure enough there are these gold lariats. Looks like they go around the necks of people.

Whatever they are called they are favored by dweebs who can't get enough being a walking billboard for some business that makes you pay to spread their name.

less is more

Not wanting to call everyone with one a dweeb, I can't stand them myself... Way too 'showy' for me... I like the MINI-wear, but the giant keychains just scream out LOOK AT ME AND THE NAME OF A PRODUCT to me... ugg...

lanyards are popular give aways at trade shows (at least in the computer field). I was recently at an art school in FL and noticed that they have become somewhat of a fashion trend. From my observation the correct way to wear/display your lanyard is to have it hang out of the pocket of your baggy jeans that are hanging off your ***.

I've never heard of anyone putting a car key on one a lanyard. They're pretty common round here for security badges, and perhaps an office key. While wearing one at work is pretty much SOP, it's considered geeky to forget to take it off after business hours.

Now, the MINI lanyard IS cool, but I don't think there's a lanyard cool enough to wear voluntarily on one's own time!

As for the blondes, they ARE cool!

Around here, it's popular to put about 5 lbs of keys on them, and wear them, fling them around your hand, drag them over counters, you know.. just basically letting the world know that you own a piece of fabric that says Tommy Hillfinger on it....
