Buy my 2004 Mini back?

Hi. I'm thinking to buy my 2004 Mini (manual with 90K miles) back from my dad who has taken great care of the car. I currently have a 2009 Clubman (manual with 50K miles). I've always liked the Clubman fine, but LOVE that 2004 Mini for its interior and exterior styling and sharp handling. Should I do it? Or am I asking for trouble?

I'm personally hooked on the 1st Gen R50 & R53's...got one each...both are 2006 and both are salt and pepper.

One of the biggest hesitations to buying any used car is the unknown doings of the previous owner. In your case, you have great information about the Mini, which takes that hesitation out of play. If you want another Mini, sounds like this is the one to buy.

The only downside I can think of would be the sad look on your dad's face as he watches it drive away.

Asking for trouble? Assuming it's a R53, the W11 lump and Getrag gear box are near bullet proof. There are a handful of items that need a watchful eye. If you are skilled and can do the work yourself or have available a top level independent service shop available, routine TLC will give you a brazilian more miles of pure motoring pleasure.

Bulletproof R53??? Maybe not catastrophic failures but they were/are rated among the least reliable and most expensive to fix cars on the road.

But yeah, buy it back -- is your dad gonna leave you high and dry if it fails?
