Random loss of power at STOP light.

I drive a 2008 R56 N12 base with around 89k I can't recall the exact number.

A few weeks ago, I was at stop light waiting to make left. I look down at something for a minute while waiting for the light. Than I tried to accelerate and realize the engine has completely shut down & loss power. Luckily, I was able to start up normally with no weird idling or noise. I had to accelerate the gas more to get momentum. Since than keeping an close eye there has no been issues whatsoevers. I been avoiding the freeway because I scare of it random power outage.

Last year I changed my spark plugs, coils, battery, water pump, thermostat housing, battery, and air filter.

I research the forums and my car is not throwing any codes & had it scan as well. My car is not direct inject so it's not carbon build up. I am avoiding to take to dealership because they'll just charge me arm & leg trying to diagnose this.

Any one have a clue what could cause this? It's driving me insane!!!

It only happen once and I'm not sure how I can replicate it. I been driving the same way other than avoiding the freeway which I rarely drive nowaday.

Is there a way to replicate it?

You checked all fluids?

Can you detail the Loss of power a little more and when was the last time it happened?

Yeah I checked all fluid took to my usual mechanic and even run a scan. It only happen ONCE which was a few weeks ago. Was hoping it will happen again.

I had my feet on the brake at full stop for a left turn. I look down for a minute or two than saw green light. I tried to accelerate on gas pedal and immediately notice there was no response or movement. The car was dead quiet as if I have parked and turn off my engine. I tried to pump the gas one more time no response. The car turn back on successfully with no issues of idling or engine noise. However, I had to really push on the gas a bit more than usual it felt heavier than usual.

Other than this ONE time all my other drive have been normal. Cold starts fine. I tried searching forum came up with no answer so far.

Hummm....for some reason im getting to the conclusion that you might have accidentally pushed the start/stop botton without noticing.

If everything is ok so far, just keep an eye and over the weekend take the highway to test it.

I wish that was the case but I am going to test the freeway at shorter distance! The reason I know that's not the case because my hands were on my phone. :x lol

Worse case scenario it turns off on the freeway, would the car keep gliding or full stop? Am a bit scare of it happening. Am hoping it's not the latter.

The car should just glide, so long as the computer does not throw itself into park!

(also first post so please excuse any rookie mistakes.)

I test drove it on the freeway Sunday less than 10 miles. It was fine and nothing happen.

However, my friend said it could possibly my timing & idling. He said it could be adjusted. I have not gotten a chance to look into it or research it!

Another random thing; the transmission shifter button to change gear. The button you push when changing drives it got stuck however it is driving fine.

My poor baby is falling apart!

mine used to shut off randomly after coming to a stop. turns out it was the variable solenoid? below the intake manifold. Didn't throw a code so it took a while to diagnose

Really?! OMG I am going to take a look at it. THANK YOU! I was still staying away from the freeway for the most part. I'll come back and updated!

hate to bring up a 2 year old post, but are you talking about the VANOS solenoid here? I am trying to diagnose a random loss of power as well and this is the closest thing to what my daughter has experienced. Went to pull away from a stop and had no power, then car died and wouldnt start. Gas smell in the cab. So i went to the rescue, turned the engine over for 8-10 seconds and finally got a rough idle start, feathered the accelerator and got it to go. once it moved, it didn't feel too bad until i slowed down again. Then it started all over
