2005 Exhaust Question?

I have read alot about the popping coming from the exhaust on the 05s. This doesn't seem to be a problem, more of what MINI intended for it to sound like. I think I read that it is closer to a tuned exhaust than on the previous models and this is where the extra hp is supposed to be coming from.

The magnaflow system we had on our 04 popped quite a bit when you let off the throttle and I sure did like the sound of that. If I put the magnaflow system on the 05 will the popping be more pronounced?

Also has anyone tried an 03-04 system on an 05. I notice that the hangers are indeed a little different, can it be done without a lot of fabrication work?

Thanks,

Eric

I was just getting ready to post concerning 05 MCS exhaust.

Has anyone installed aftermarket catback on an 05MCS?

Have the hangers/install points changed from 04?

05MCS Magna Flow Installed

I just had a Magna Flow installed on my 05 MCS. My "exhaust guy" said it went in with out a problem. I think I have read where they did change the hangers. It looks sweet and SOUNDS GREAT!! I love the tips and the stainless steel mufflers--hardly show, but what you see matches my exterior chrome. Under car BLING BLING! Nick

DoubleNick,

I am considering a Magnaflow catback for my 05 MCS but am concerned about it being loud with the windows up and the sunroof closed. What is your opinion on the 'drone' with your Mini closed up at highway speeds?

Well here in East Texas long minis is not a concern, the bubba trucks are loud. I really didnt think the magnaflow is as loud as everyone claims it to be, course going up around v8s, now thats loud. There is a slight drone with the magnaflow but nothing that can not be delt with IMO. Dee was just as happy as I was with the magnaflow exhaust. We just need to make sure it will work on the 05 MCS.

The tips will eventually turn colors and get dirty. The best thing to clean them with is Eagle One wheel cleaner, and that came straight from a Magnaflow rep. It does work very well and makes them look new again.

Not TOO Loud

Indi,
Please put this in context. I am an exhaustaholic. For the last 14 yrs I have driven a 91 Mustang 5.0 with Off Road H Pipe/Headers etc, a 98 Z28 Camaro with an SLP Loud Mouth--straight pipes exhaust, and a 2001 Corvette with a SLP Loud Mouth --no mufflers--straight pipes exhaust. So driving a stock MCS was like driving a quiet hearse. I wanted the loudest exhaust--consensus appeared to be Magna Flow. I have to tell you at first I was a little disappointed--not very loud: BUT a nice deep tone. With 500 miles on it I have grown to love it. It can be quiet at start up and idle and it can roar when you get into it. Drone: negligible/a tiny bit at 4,000 rpm going up an incline--but compared to what I was use to--minimal. Adding the Promini CAI has made the sound package for me. (See my Sig). Also be advised I am 61 (that is sixty-onederful) and my hearing may not be what it use to be. Go for it. I found one on line for $575.00. Nick

Nick,

Thanks for the info. My MCS should arrive next month. I'm not in a big hurry to do a lot of mods... but a more aggressive exhaust note is definately tops on my list.

I've done a couple: just lop off about 2.25" of the hanger tips from the stock exhaust hangers and weld them to the inner hangers of an early style if you don't have the '05 style exhaust. Don't forget to rust proof the new stubs because the welding and polishing will take the coating off.
