Fob Unintentionally Opens Trunk

I seriously want to find the designer who created this fob and shove it down his/her throat. Twice a week, minimum. I get in the car, start it up, go to back up, and my backup cam is disabled because the %^#ing fob has popped the trunk while in my pocket.

The little separators between the three buttons do nothing because they don't protrude into usefulness.

I see other people come up with a solution to relocate the fob to a purse (which I don't carry), to a shirt pocket (which I don't have), etc. I see people working around a design, which I consider the wrong way to go about things. For a company that's built its back on design I think someone there needs to be slapped back into consciousness.

Can you tell I'm frustrated?

Anyone out there have any solution to my frustration? Anyone out there know if I can pry the button cover off and sabotage the contents? Sorry, I probably should have mentioned that I have Comfort Access.

Thanks in advance for saving me from a messy murder rap.

Does happen to me ever. In fact I really have to press the button pretty firmly to get it to open.

^^^^ not

Early '13 Clubman here, same issue w/ door opener on fob.

More than once my neighbor's called me to tell me the right rear door's open with the car parked in my driveway. I carry my keys in my trouser pockets, somehow or other even walking around the house I sometimes activate that danged button & the door pops open.

Usually when it's pouring rain, or snowing a blizzard....

My fob's trunk release button is also too easily triggered simply by rolling around in my pocket. A fix is needed by Mini.

So I went and compared my 2014 fob to the 2016 four dr one my wife has. They changed the design to almost no perceptible bump between buttons. My 14 fob has raised divisions which keep the buttons more protected.

At least for the F54, word on the street is that there is a software update that will require 2 presses to open the rear doors instead of one long press. I assume it also applies to the F55/F56. I haven't had it done yet but I have found the rear open when I went outside in the morning 3 times in the last 6 months ... and once it happened while I was reaching for something in the back seat at a red light (keys in my pocket). So I'm looking forward to the update!

Sounds like it's out already and works with all the F-chassis MINIs. New behavior is to hit the unlock button first THEN press and hold the trunk button. This update requires a reprogram (3-4 hours in the shop), but it sounds like it's covered under warranty.

SI M51 09 16 is the bulletin #.

Wondering how to do this in ESYS yourself so you can skip the dealer (and the 3-4 hour reprogram). Any coders want to chime in?

Just drop it in your cup holder, center console, pass seat, door compartment, really anywhere in the car. Just leave it out in the open, the MINI will not allow you to lock the key in the car anyways so no worries there. Just sounds like it needs to be anywhere BUT your pocket.

Thanks for this! I definitely prefer to put the onus on MINI for the fix rather than jumping through hoops forced on me by an idiot designer. We all paid a premium for a design-forward brand, and I expect to receive that value.

Appreciate all who chimed in. Thanks I'll let you know how it goes with the fix.

It's a personal preference thing - I keep my key in my pocket and have only once accidentally popped the trunk open while driving and a couple times while in my house, but I prefer the one touch approach. I also don't have a Clubman where that mistake would mean my rear doors go swinging open, so there's that!

It's nice that at least MINI is giving the option to change the behavior without charging for the program or forcing it through by being part of the normal software

I've had my 2015 F56 for two years... never once accidentally popped open the trunk. Actually, I've never even used the button more than once or twice.

I keep my keys on a carabiner keyring that I always keep attached to my belt loop on my pants.

Same problem here. Usually when I lean into the backseat. I hit the stupid fob every time!

I have a 2015 F56, and had this problem several times initially when I kept the fat stupid design key fob in my front pocket. I now put it in the cup holder, or carefully put it in my pocket and make sure nothing is in there too.

It's good that they came out with a workaround. I'll ask for the update too while doing my 2nd year free oil change. I'm also going to have them replace the rear view mirror's rain sensor gel pack as it is leaking again for maybe the 6th time now.

SIM510916 for the Reprogramming

I had stopped in to the dealers and discussed this with them about a month ago month ago, when I first learned of it. I am one to throw the FOB in my pant's pocket, when I exit the vehicle and that's where it always remains...

I had come out of work a few times to find the Barn door of my Clubman open and was baffled This happened several times, until I was reaching into the back seat one day and the Barn door opened. Since, i was right there i figured out it was me doing it being pressed while in my pocket.

I started leaving it out of my pocket and on my desk at work. ...But would walk all the way out to my car, after work only to realize I forgot my FOB inside I was happy to find this MINI SIM to fix it. You now have to first hit the unlock, and then the trunk opening.

Long story short: I had it done today, and am very Happy.

I have a Clubman and had them do the update before going on vacation. Works like a charm now. Have to unlock the doors first then hit the trunk/barn door button.

I need to take my '15 F56 MCS in for this update. I keep my fob in the coin pocket of my jeans, and I accidentally pop the hatch at least 2-3 times a month, it's infuriating.

Just got our F54 in September. Brought a printout of this to the service who had never heard of it. Had to insist that MINI pay for reprogram. Took all day (three times the charm). But done now and happy.

My dealer knows nothing about Mini's fix for the highly irritating key fob hatch triggering problem - sometimes occurring for me multiple times in the same car trip. How is it identified so I can tell my dealer and they will be able to find it? Thanks.

I stopped sitting in the car with my Fob in my back pocket, but it did happen a lot on my 2016 JCW. But, what's this update?

It fixes the issue, whereas you must hit the unlock before pressing the hatch/trunk/door opening.

This way it won't open if hit once in your pocket as the unlock first must be depressed.

Why would you carry the fob in your back pocket. I would be afraid of breaking an expensive part by sitting on it. Doesn't sound very comfortable either.

I missed where it was mentioned "back pocket". I personally always carry it in one of my front pant pockets, and before I had the software fix, I had come out a few times to my rear barn doors open

I personally love the software fix, and have not had the unexpected opening since...
