F55/F56 Rear tyres rubbing on inner felt lining after lowering
Rear tyres rubbing on inner felt lining after lowering
I have 17x8 ET45 running 215/45/17 tyres and I've had no problems with anything rubbing until I had passengers in the rear and a full tank of fuel...
The rear is lowered around 35mm so not slammed under the arches although with rear arches it probably lowers another 10mm at the rear when passengers in.
Every time I cornered I could hear something rubbing. When i stopped to look I could see that the rear tyre was was rubbing on the felt lining which seems to be pertruding out a little which compounded the problem I suspect...
I have pushed the lining back in place as tight as it can go and will see if it happens again next time... Failing that I may cut some of the felt away unless there is some method of holding the felt tightly down.
Anyone else have this problem or found a solution?

Been reading on BMW forums that many have just used a stanley knife to cut a bit away if needed. Might try that if it still happens
According to vetsvette your wheels & tires should be about the same re: push out, so it's either your tires or the ride height causing the issue. I'd prefer the 7.5" wheel width but I'd think what you have should work based on what I've seen others running. No two cars are identical I suppose.

I did notice when i inspected it after the rubbing started that the arch liner at the rear is a little loose as if it's not clipped on securely. I must have pressed the arch liner towards the arch approx. 10-15mm before it was flush. I wonder if there are any clips that keep it tightly in place?
Thanks.. Will keep you updated although I don't carry passengers too often... Might find something heavy to put in the boot (Have a spare set of wheels) to see if I can replicate the problem...

Couldn't make out if there's a clip at the upper part of the trim which is where it came loose.
Just an update to say that pushing the felt trim and tucking it back in to the arches worked as ive just tries it with passengers.
Will keep an eye if it stays in place but its a relief that no major bodywork mods are needed.

I think the trim might have been moved from my OCD cleaning routine as I use a Wheel Woolies brush to scrub the felt lining every time I wash the car.
That possibly might explain it not being in place tightly. Fingers crossed..
