JCW Tune Controller

So I found out my new to me 2015 Cooper S has the JCW tune. Yeah I know, took me a few weeks to notice all the emblems inside the engine bay.

Anyways I started searching to read up on it more and I saw some people mention a bluetooth controller of some sort that would allow it to switch between modes.

My question is do they all come with this? I did not get it when I bought mine, is it possible to switch modes another way?

Thanks!

The BT controller only controls the exhaust system. Make sure you have the JCW Pro exhaust first. Chances are the first owner sold the exhaust and re-installed the stock system. If so, you still have the tune and can buy an aftermarket system like the one from AWE Tuning.

Ah so the controller goes with the exhaust and not the tune? How do I know which exhaust I have?

Do the tips look like this?

If so, look under the rear and see if it looks like this.

If all the above is yes, then you have the JCW Pro Exhaust System. Then all you need is to order the FOB controller and have it programmed. ~$280-$300 for the controller.

If it doesn't look like that then you're outa luck with the controller part.

If you do if fact have the JCW Pro exhaust and you bought it from a dealer, I would raise hell about not getting all the parts for the car. It's like not getting a Key FOB.

Ok took a look at it and it's definitely like the one pictured. I will try contacting dealer tomorrow but I doubt they even know about it as they barely knew much about the mini in general.

Is there any other way to change the settings on it? If it's Bluetooth you would think you could do it through an app or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner was on here since they seemed to be an enthusiast.

Your only options are to find the original or have a Mini dealer order a new one. Just curious... You have a '15 so have you checked the secret compartment?

In case you haven't seen one this is what it looks like. It's about the size of your thumb.
I found it for $217 on line. Part # 18302413298. You'll still need your dealer to sync it with the car.

You can wire the exhaust open and enjoy the 10 extra horsepower and wonderful sound if you don't have the controller although you have to listen to it all of the time which can be annoying, particularly if you are in an area that is sensitive to noise or there are local noise ordinances. It also seems to be a noise magnet for the guys and gals (PC posting) in blue, aka John Law.

I still have not heard back from the dealer about the controller. How can I wire it? I'd be interested to see how loud it is, I probably wouldn't mind having it on all the time, my other car is a camaro and it's pretty loud lol.

You can see the valve mechanism on the pipe and it is a simple butterfly valve. Just a short piece of wire and a pair of pliers is all you need. I think there are some pictures on some of the earlier posts that show it. I will see if I can find them and share them.

I don't have a really good picture of it after all. Check out vetsvette post earlier in this thread with his mini on the rack. You can see it on the starboard exhaust and then you know where to look on yours the valve is there on yours as well if it is the JCW PRO exhaust.

Did you buy it from a Mini dealer? If you did there shouldn't be a problem for them to come up with a Fob. If not a Mini dealer give them the part number I gave you and tell them they need to order it. This is a major part of a $2K+ option (with installation) that they are keeping from you. Failing that, I would spring for a controller. As a last resort, as Dan suggested, you can "wire" it open which is a physical/mechanical patch.

The link below is to an ad for the Tuning Kit. It shows a couple pictures of the value and will give you an idea of everything involved with the Kit. Has a good pic of the Fob also.

Thanks Im still waiting for the dealer to get back to me. I believe my sales guy is out this week. It's a BMW dealer and the car is CPO but they really didn't even seem to know much about it. At first they were telling me it was a "real" JCW but based on the price and the JCW packages listed on the options sheet I was pretty certain it wasn't. However I didn't know about the special exhaust and controller until I came on here and did some research.

My concern is, if I can't get the dealer to give me one, spending $300+ and possibly never using it again once it's switched. I remember my old bmw had a similar thing where one exhaust tip would get shut off, however you could easily bypass that one by just unplugging a wire in the trunk.

You can get yours to stay open at all times, but you need to have the controller to set it in the open position before unplugging the wires. The default position is "closed". In normal operation, you have to select open every time you start the car. I run mine open 99% of the time, but I like having the option to select closed when I happen to be cruising along beside a state trooper or in a hospital zone.
Being a CPO car there shouldn't be a problem for the dealer to find you a fob.

Couldn't it be a real JCW but with the sport exhaust as an extra add on? I'm not real familiar with the 2015's. But if it's a CPO, they really should provide you with the remote. I'd insist!

Real quick and easy way to tell if you have the JCW kit:
- The tune will come with a numbered plaque affixed to the engine cover and there should be a paper certificate with the serial no and the VIN. Any dealer can also look up the VIN and see the tuning kit was added as well. The exhaust doesn't show up though, so you have to inspect it visually.
- Look straight into the exhaust. If you see a valve on the right side, you have the JCW Pro exhaust.

Update: dealer tried to contact previous owner, they claimed not to have it/can't find it. Dealer will be ordering one for me.

Don't forget to have them sync it with your system before you leave the dealership with it.

Dealer just sent me this to show it arrived, however instructions seems to show you can pair it yourself pretty easily.
