R50/53 '05 JCW noise (timing chain or belt noise?)
'05 JCW noise (timing chain or belt noise?)
Hey guys I'm trying to figure out what this noise might be. I've got a new belt and belt tensioner system on the way this week but I'm wondering if the noise is more of a timing chain noise.
My last mini I seem to remember making a bunch of noise around the passenger side valve cover but nothing as loud as all the "timing chain tensioner" videos I see on youtube.
Here is what it sounds like. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Drew!
Sounds are so difficult to diagnose. It's difficult to weed out the 'normal' engine sounds and identify the 'noise.'
That said, it sounds like it could be:
1. timing chain or related components
2. idler pulley
3. supercharger
In other words - too difficult to say from the video.

If your belt and tensioner doesn't do it, it sounds a lot like my car when I was having lifter (hydraulic lash adjuster) / cam noise. Pull the valve cover off, and check the rocker arms for wiggle. Visually inspect the cam carefully, it's best to remove the rocker arms to get a better look see...
I think I'll pick up a new chain tensioner and do that as well and see if it goes away. I don't think it's the supercharger because it's quieter closer to the front of the car. It's loudest at the top/back of the valve cover on the passenger side. If that doesn't do it I'll pull the valve cover when I get the chance to check it out.
Thank you guys.
Thank you guys.

So you changed the BELT tensioner but not the timing chain tensioner you asked about?
I your most recent video it sounds like you have a very loose belt...it's nearly squeeling at 800 rpm before there is even a load on the sc...
What belt did you get? Often the stock size belts that parts counters push are too long...even for a stick pulley.
