Need advice on "new to me" 2005 Mini Cooper S

Hey everyone! I just picked up a 2005 Mini Cooper S this past weekend. It has 159K miles and drives great. However, I do have a question about the "EML" light intermittently coming on. So far the drivability has not suffered. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any other symptoms with this light and have you checked to see if any codes are present in the system?

EML - 'Electronic Module Light'.
Several things can cause that. You need to get the codes read to find out what is causing it. Do Not take that light lightly.

You can go to an auto parts store, many do free code reading, you can buy your own reader or a obd11 dongle and phone app that will read codes. GL

Thanks for the responses. I will have the code read asap. The "Service Engine Soon" light is on, so I will take it to the dealer to perform a service on the car. So far the engine runs without any hiccups or hesitation. I do notice a slight pinging sometimes under hard acceleration, so I am going to make sure to fill up on some non oxygenated premium gas this week.

Good morning guys! I put a can of "Gumout" fuel cleaner and a full tank of non ethanol 91 octane gas and so far the EML light has not returned. I also noticed that the slight pinging sound under acceleration has disappeared.

Do you run premium gas all the time? Could've had bad gas, but you'll still want to investigate what code may be stored in the system to make sure there are no other issues afoot.

ALWAYS run the highest octane you can get in these cars (91 here in CA). also recommend finding good independent MINI specialist shop local to you (ask other mini drivers, local club members, etc.). you may get quite frustrated $$$ wise, and spotty expertise, at a dealership.

Well...car NEEDS 91...it is a requirement....
READ THE BOOK...
you have a supercharger....and the motor a high performance, high compression motor ..
running less can burn the valves...and result in very $$ repairs.
It was not till the "prince" motors that came out on the gen2 cars that you could use 87...

Thanks. Since I got it a few weeks ago from a used dealer in Minneapolis, I am assuming that they put in the cheapest gas they could find. I have been running 91 octane since I picked it up. I have to do the same for my 2008 VW R32, so I am very familiar with the requirement for the use of premium gas. I do plan to take it to my mechanic at NurTechnik to look over.

Another 'requirement': Top Tier gas, here's the official list.

It does make a difference learned the hard way from a self inflicted wound. I was using a supermarket's fuel because of the discount. Threw a code and spent $$$ on a new O sensor.
