Okay so I've wanted to do the boost tube mod for a while now and finally got around to it. After researching what my options were I found that I could buy the hot side boost tube from Alta for 130 bucks. Now I'm not made of money so I did a lot more looking around and found that way motor works makes a tube that replaces just the silencer section for only 60 bucks. I bought it. So after about an hour today I got it installed on the car. ( I found that by completely unhooking the coolant reservoir you can reach the mounting bracket from the top of the car.) I have noticed that the car holds 12psi rather than 10psi. As far as turbo noise, it actually sounds quieter. Now it could just be me but I don't know. So all in all I was able to see another 2psi for about 60 bucks and an hour of time to install it. I think I got away with it pretty swell

 

Hmmm, I've been interested in replacing my hot side boost tube. Sounds like a good option. I wonder how much boost the Alta tube would bring, I think that it is wider to allow more air to flow through.

 

Yes are res delete pipe we make is an ideal replacement. We knew that the stock hoses always fit perfect and the only thing we were trying to do was remove the resonator in the pipe. So we took the simple approach with the straight aluminum tube. We also made nice grooves on both ends to ensure the hose clamps can be made tight and have no leaks.

Don't bother with buying the solid silicone pipes as they never fit as well as the stock. Also 2 of the brands avail fit so bad they always rub on parts and silicone will wear out fast.

 

Not to promote or put down anyone's ideas on the hot-side tube, I have tried a couple of different methods. First was to buy a piece of aluminum tubing of the proper diameter and length, then have my local muffler/radiator shop add a bead of weld on each end to keep the stock rubber tubes from blowing off, then placed it where the stock muffler was. Worked OK. Not too hard to remove the stock muffler and install the new piece. Then, I found and bought an aluminum tube to replace the muffler that included fins said to help cool the air more. Never installed that one, as it felt kinda heavy, and had no provisions for a mounting point. I finally ended up buying an ALTA hot-side tube, and installed it. Seemed like a robust piece, and had a good strong feel to it. It was a very tight fit on both ends, I felt this was a bonus. Also seemed a bit smoother on the inside, and seemed to be larger in certain areas than the stock tubing. I found that once installed, there was a bit of interference with the ALTA tube on the coolant reservoir. My solution was to trim about 3/4 to one inch of length from the turbo side of the ALTA tube. Not easy to do once installed, but I got it done. I am happy with the results. Call this an FYI type of post.

I still have the finned aluminum piece, if anyone is interested. Not saying it's a bad unit, just not sure of any cooling gains claimed, and did not like the weight without support. I guess it could be zip-tied to something, just not a lot of room in there.

 

Has anyone noticed a difference after doing the hot side boost tube? I haven't been able to drive my car much to notice a change, I know they say it adds 10 hp but is that dyno proven?

 

I noticed more turbo sound. HP gains? Just doing something makes my MINI go faster! The subjective butt-dyno. Real numbers? Dyno runs can also be subjective. Ambient air temp, moisture content, engine temp, etc. can all skew dyno numbers. I am not aware of anyone able to swap parts then run the new parts in the same exact environment. Even the same dyno under the same conditions can run different numbers. Thus, seat-of-the-pants is the only "true" dyno. Especially when talking 5-10 claimed HP.

 

Recently installed this one from NM NM (hot side) discharge pipe and I am pretty happy with it. It was easy to install, fit perfectly, and gave me slightly better boost response. Is it worth $228? Thats up to you...

 

If someone told you a boost tube alone would give you 10hp you now know that person knows nothing as that isn't possible, EVER

 

That's kinda what I was thinking. The only way I could see that being true is if it raised boost levels.

 

I have the way aluminum tube, it's a quality piece, but it's heavy. Are there any issues swapping this in since the old tube has a mount and this will be free floating?

 

I have the Sneeds tube but uninstalled. $40 shipped.

A hardy DIYer should be able to replicate this easily but I think the rolled edge is pertinent.

The reason why I did this was to get more turbo noise like the supercharger whine. We'll see if it's a yah or nay when I install it.

I would assume not a problem.

But I went with the Alta full silicone pipe after having the VIP custom parts tube pop off.

I bought a piece of pipe from my local muffler shop and had them flare the ends so the hose clamp has somthing to grab onto. Cost me 8 bucks and 20 minuets of my time. Works exaclty the same as somthing u buy. I felt like I had a little more throttle response after doing this.

It actually weights less than a pound, but feels heavy since it replaces a plastic part. We machine it out of a solid piece of aluminum bar stock to make it the highest quality possible.
There is absolutely no issue with not mounting it to the tab like the stock one as it doesn't take up near the space the plastic muffler does. So it doesn't need to be pulled to one side. Also the nice machined grooves we have not only serve to keep the rubber from sliding off under boost, or with old hoses like bead rolled tube can. But also allow you to tighten them down tight enough it all locks it straight so the tube doesn't move around, and keeps the hoses in place.

 

I bought the Alta pipe and put it on one night with my 13-year-old son. Fun father-son project that only took about 20 minutes. Noticed that the turbo schools a little quicker, but honestly it is only on because I am changing the innercooler as well.
