NW NC Leaf Rally, Oct 23, 2004
Hey, we're right up beside TN - join us for this!
How about the windiest twisty roads you can imagine, the scenic splendor of our Appalachian mountains, authentic country life on the roads less traveled, and the crisp beauty of fall leaf color? -
-
WHEN: Saturday, Oct 23, 2004
WHERE: Sugar Grove, NC (About 12 miles West of Boone)
TENTATIVE PLAN (Any and all ideas welcome!): We'll meet up at the Historic Cove Creek High School (home of the Doc & Merle Watson Folk Music Museum; see www.CoveCreek.net for map and info) at about 9 on the 23rd; start with some coffee, ham biscuits, and a little bluegrass. We can start later if folks would so prefer. I'll have some Doc Watson CDs for folks to play while on the drive so that you can feel in character! Then, up & around George's Gap Road and other twisties to the backside of Beech Mountain, down the front side of Beech to Banner Elk and a yummy lunch, then perhaps to Grandfather Mountain & the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, then possibly down the Blue Ridge Parkway to at least the Linville Viaduct. If you want to stay in the area on Friday night, I'll put as many as possible up at my place or can find you a really neat bed & breakfast! We do have motels too! -

This sounds great. I saw this on MINI2 and was considering it because it sounded like fun. Unfortunately
I will be in Atlanta for a marching band competition with my daughter.
Our club is trying out a couple of other boards to communicate on. I will post your drive on them too with a link to here in case anyone else is interested.
My sister is a bluegrass musician and songwriter. Bluegrass sure goes along great with TN/NC twisties doesn't it?

Leaf Rally Cancelled
Sorry, folks. Have had to cancel this. I've had weeks of computer issues now - virus infection, unresolved problems in replacing equipment - don't exactly know how to get it all to work again. Big problem with both internet access & email, only partially resolved.
Our Rally start point was usurped. A large community farm heritage fair at the old Cove Creek School was rescheduled to this Saturday, the 23rd, due to Ivan's visit here. No place to meet, and the area will be crawling with tourists. Am so very disappointed and sorry. -

MountainGal, when I read your first post, I slapped myself on the head and wondered how I was going to make it across country (2500 mi) in 3 days to the Blue Ridge country for this meet. Too bad it's now cancelled, but I definitely feel that this should be considered again next year. It's an alternative to the Dragon Run (not for everybody) and I've always wanted to visit the Blue Ridge parkway.
"Smokey" lives or works around there (Boone), so you might contact him. He is active in the Roadfly forum.

Fall of the Dragon II
So sorry about the cancellation of your Leaf Rally! Why don't you come join us at the Dragon this weekend? A bunch of us will be staying at Fontana Village, hanging out together and driving the Dragon! Y'all are more than welcome to meet us. Just look for all the MINIs!
Most of us will arrive at Fontana Village on Thursday, Oct. 21 and leave Sunday, Oct. 24. We are coming from Detroit, Ohio, New York, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, etc...and in my case, California!
This is not an organized event, per se, just friends who like to slay the Dragon and enjoy the beauty of the area!
