Help with suspension for a noob

I am considering getting new shocks for my car because the current ones are so harsh. If I hit the smallest pothole I feel like I drove into a ditch. I currently have the OEM shocks. I don't (think) that I want to lower my car, and if I do not too much because I live in NYC. I would really just like to get shocks that provide a softer ride. thank you guys.

I'd highly recommend doing the Bilstein Touring Class shocks HERE and struts HERE. They're a direct OEM replacement that are slightly stiffer and give a performance gain all while still retaining a smooth ride. They're also extremely cost efficient and work with your OE springs. Let me know if you have any questions.
