Hey all,

Just received my JCW Countryman today and was disappointed that there was no popping and burbling. Does it need to be broken in before it starts? My 2013 Countryman S did it all the time and now with the new car... Nothing. Also, I ordered a Megan Racing strut tower bar and realized it won't fit because of the large rubber gasket that seems to surround the engine. Any advice?

I've got a '13 R61 JCW in automatic that I purchased in August of '15 with only 1900 miles. My wife has a '14 R60 S & we both noticed right away that her exhaust was not only deeper but louder in both regular & Sport modes. Her car in Sport mode burbles, pops, backfires & just sounds mean. Mine now has almost 5,000 miles on it & sounds so tame, quiet & unassuming. Nothing like I expected a "special" model like the JCW to resemble. My exhaust has a quieter, higher pitched, raspy note, while her "S" has a deep & rumbly sound.

I've read threads in the forums that there were rumors of Mini "tuning out" the pop & burble on the JCW's...not sure what that means. I know my car gets 3-4 mpg better than the "S" which means it may be running leaner & therefore not burning as much unspent fuel...again, not sure why the JCW would be running leaner, but I'm no mechanic.

I don't have much hope for mine & will probably do a custom tune & open up the exhaust further once it's out of warranty. Hopefully the 2016 models are different & yours will start to sound more aggressive with time.

It would if not for the huge gasket that surrounds the motor... It will just have to be modified once I work up the courage to do so. Today started burbling a bit but not really gonna press hard until broken in and other mods are installed. Thanks for the response. I will say that the sport mode is impressive, the shifting when coming to a stop is amazing and the brakes are definitely different that what I thought. After reading all the horrible reviews, they exceeded my expectations. Now just about 1000 more miles and we can see what all the fuss is about with the JCW's.

 

The hood insulation or the front gasket ?

 

Definitely the front gasket... It needs to have a hole/slot cut to allow the fitment of the strut bar. Still trying to figure out how to do it without messing anything up.

 

ok, can you show a pic of the cut in the gasket? Its those short gaskets on the left and right, above the strut mounts ?

 

I haven't made the cut yet... Trying to figure out the best way to do it.

I'd just slit the molding on both sides and fold it down. The if you remove the bar you can just glue the molding back at the seams.

Exactly what I did on mine. I think I used a fairly new tin snips (used and abused ones tend to not cut as cleanly), but a good box cutter would probably work just as well.

 

I am going to take the plunge tonight I think... I was debating trying to use a hole saw to make the hole nice and clean and still have the functionality of the gasket. The replacement gasket can't be too expensive if I were to remove.

Also on a totally separate note... Does anyone have pictures of the "main floor carpet/ luggage compartment" for the countryman by ECS. I read all the forums about it lastnight after receiving my weathertech liner that didn't fit quite right. I have the factory flat load floor, and was wondering if this is an accurate replacement part for my car. If it does what I think it will, meaning easy install to make a really flat floor and make the liner actually fit, I will buy. Otherwise I will return the Weathertech mat. Again, I want to stress that I did read all the previous posts and still confused since no one put up pictures with a before and after. Thanks, you all have made this place a primary source of knowledge when deciding what to change.
