Grill Light Accessories

Hey guys,

I've had these lights on my grill since I bought my MINI two years ago, and I've never turned them on. I've decided that I would like to.

There is a button to the left of my wheel on top of the dash that looks responsible to being the on and off button, but when I press it, nothing happens. It has a little green light to show active/inactive on the right side of it.

Am I missing a fuse? What's up?

Thanks in advance.

those are called driving lights

they will only come on with your "main" beams .... aka bright beam aka high beam . . .

when you push the little button and the green light comes on they are 'active' and will then come on with the brights (or immediately if the brights are already on)

all this of course assuming there IS no blown fuse or disconnected wire or blown bulb . . .

IF you have never used them, please check the AIM b4 you do so. Very easy for them to have been knocked about and blind an oncoming driver!

see section 10 of the installation instructions: http://www.minimania.com/pdfile/R56_Rally_Lights.pdf

Switching on additional headlights automatically

Once they have been activated, the additional
headlights come on automatically with the headlight
main beam or the headlamp flasher.
As soon as you have switched the ignition off/on again,
you must reactivate the additional headlights.
- Switch on the ignition or start the engine
- Press the button (1) for activation
The additional headlights are now activated when the
green light (2) in the pushbutton (1) is lit.
- Switch on the headlights or operate the headlamp
flasher
The additional headlights now come on automatically with
the headlight main beam or the headlamp flasher.

Switching on additional headlights manually:
- Switch on the ignition or start the engine
- Switch on the headlights or operate the headlamp
flasher
- Press the button (1) to switch on lights
The additional headlights now come on automatically with
the headlight main beam or the headlamp flasher.

Switching off additional headlights:
- Switch off main headlights or press the button (1) again

IF they don't work, the referenced document has the wiring diagram . . .

+1 Driving lights or rally lights. Come on with the high beam. Check the fuse and that the bulbs are not burned out or something disconnected with the wiring near the grille.

Well, I took a look at the section mentioned previously. Must have a blown fuse because the green light stays unlit upon pressing the button...

About to see if I can find out which fuse from that manual. Anybody else have any idea which fuse it might be? It must be missing because all my fuses look fine.

Sounds like a short. Check the wiring. It does quite a bit of twisting and turning under the bonnet, so a wire could be nicked and grounding.

which fuse pops?

You could start by removing the bulb from one side and see if the other side works ... it might help localize the problem IF it is on the bulb end . . . I think the GEN2 uses a connector to each light just behind the grill. Disconnect one side then the other here ... see step 7 of the PDF I linked

There is a relay ( shown with just the relay plug base ) and inline fuse on the main wire harness for the kit.
