R56 Cooper S engine noise - humming?
Do all Cooper S engines make a humming noise (like a sewing machine maybe) - it sounds like a much smaller engine than the 1600cc turbo.
It sounds like a noise from a belt or a pump wirring, not too loud and only noticeable at slow speeds. No fault codes, engines temps ok and runs perfectly.

Which side do you hear it on ? Driver or passenger side. Top or bottom of the engine ?
With engine on or off ?
Thanks

It's a general engine noise - not really coming from any specific side. Mostly heard at low speeds and low rpm. Once it's up and going the noise tends to fade.
heres a video - at the end I'm just touching the accelerator to show the humming noise.

What year is this , I can see its an N14. Sounds like a belt / pulley or something. Can you listen to the passenger side wheel well and see if its coming from there ?
I cant tell from the audio speakers here , they dont pic up all the sounds.

I'm on my Galaxy S5 right now, kind of sounded like a loose timing chain or a belt, but don't quote me on that until I go home and hear it on my computer speakers.

Tensioners need oil pressure to function correctly, when you're at 2500 - 4000 RPM's oil pressure increases pushing the hydrolic tensioner piston all the way out. When idling you have lower oil pressure together with a tensioner that needs more oil pressure to properly tension the timing chain. At the very least get a measurement of your timing chain slack to see if you need either a new tensioner or all of the timing chain components replaced. If your chain measures no more than 68mm then you need a tensioner for now.
