no chain pre-tensioner

Replacing chain and tensioner (guides are good). I have cam timing locking kit but no pre-tensioner. I read somewhere on here about how to do it without pre-tensioner,but I can't find the thread. Something about keeping slack on tensioner side so that when tensioner installed there won't be any slack anywhere in chain, not sure though.

It's my understanding that with the cams and crank locked, you drop in the new timing chain / gears/ guides and install the bolts for the cams and crank but don't tighten them. Then you install the tensioner which will remove the slack. Now you can secure the cam sprockets and the crank sprocket.

Have a look at this page produced by promini.
