R56 suspension for a dedicated autox/track car
suspension for a dedicated autox/track car
after my last autox, its time to replace my conti DWs, and i was also going to get some camber plates to help with the outside edge tire wear. i figured since im doing camber plates, why not do the shocks/springs as well, after 58k they are probably due for replacement soon anyways. then i thought, why not just do this right and start turning this into my personal race car.
ive been doing a lot of research on suspension mods and though a majority of them mention tracking, its all still a compromise as they are still daily drivers. my mini is only going to be used for autox and eventually track. my car is currently stock save for some ebc greens.
does anyone know of a setup for the track, no compromises needed for ride comfort for daily driving, and is most importantly less than $2000? i just want a car that can hold its own around the cones and a track and put a smile on my face after im done.
after all my research, i am leaning towards st's xta coilovers, it has adjustable dampening and it comes with what i was originally looking for to begin with, adjustable camber plates. plus in may they have a $150 rebate so thats very nice. i was thinking it should be fine on its hardest setting, and in the future could always get stiffer springs

You really don't have the budget for good. Besides, what class you are in, determines what you can do. You can easly spend a lot of money and not be competitive at all. But then, why spend all that money to not be competitive?
the most important mod i wanted to have done was the camber plates just so i would not go through tires as quickly.
from the first sentence of your response, i assume theres no super bang for the buck set up for tracking under 2k. i was thinking there would be a shock and spring combo that would work, as opposed to a coilover.
I would think that adjustability is your biggest friend. I don't know if anyone makes a nice double adjustable shock (I'm assuming that a single adjustable koni or bilstein would not work, that may not be a good asumption).
I would call some vendors that advertise on the site and see if you get some common answers. I have read good threads about kw's, ohlins, and other coil overs, but you are likely at that $2000 price point for really nice stuff.

There is a reason cheap coil overs are cheap. There is a reason Ohlins, JAZ, Moton are expensive, and it's not all just marketing.
IMO, autocross and full on track driving are completely different animals. Yes you can do both, but optimizing for both is really hard.
Competing against yourself is all well and good, but it doesn't tell you if you are getting better, or just the car. Competing against the same class of car, (different drivers), does.
Anyway, if it were me... I'd get some Ireland Engineering camber plates, some Koni yellows, NM springs (? pick a spring...), and a rear bar. Add some sticky R comps on some track wheels, and go have fun. The car will be better than you are for a long time. By the time you are better than the car, you will know what the limiting factor is, and what needs to be changed. (if you don't, change your name to Cole Trickle, and get a crew chief and engineer...lol Days of Thunder reference)

Why not go with some TCKline racing DA coilovers. They're just over 2k and he will help you personally set it up. A lot of guys on the BMW scene are loving the TCK setup. http://www.tcklineracing.com/webdocs...Details689.cfm

i was thinking of that shock/spring combo at first, but with that rebate ST is having it, it turns out its more expensive. plus the adjustability may be beneficial. KW has a good reputation from what ive read and ST perform just the same as theyre made by them. just different metal used in the body and different warranty because of that
