Low Speed Fan and Heater

Hello everyone, my first post here on NAM.

I am having issues and wonder if anyone can help out. I searched the forums and cannot seem to find a good fix to this problem in the r56.

I have a 2009 Cooper Justa. Here are the issues,

Leaky Thermostat Housing Fixed
Leaky Water pump Fixed

Low Speed Fan not working

For some reason, the fan does not turn on until the car gets to about 115 C or until I turn on my AC and keep it on. It should be around 80 C with the low fan but it never comes on.

Heater works intermittently

When I use the heater, it runs hot like it is supposed to but then it will blow cold air and then it will blow hot air again and so on.. I have absolutely no idea why this does this.

This is my first mini I bought used some 25K miles ago and am worried that this may have been an impulse purchase.

Please help!!

Possible air in cooling system,"air pockets" that interfere with the coolant circulation.

Would that cause both issues?

To bleed the system would I just run the engine for a while with the coolant cap off? Or is there a better way to do this.

Yep,there is bleeding screw on thermostat housing,be care! It is "plastic" screw, just open a little when the engine is hot, idle runnning. Then add, if necessary, the coolant fluid when the engine has cooled slightly.

Thanks Holkki, unfortunately this did not fix the issue, any other ideas? Would the coolant fan Low speedy be one of those resistor issues?

Maybe..I remember reading that a number of factors affecting the operation of the fan , like AC , speed/loading, torque, sport button etc.

Okay, I may just replace the radiator, I think that should fix the issue.

Have you considered the first cooling system flushing? It`s a cheaper way and do not mind even if you change a radiator..When I flush my car cooling system, I remember how tricky was bleeding the system, it helped when squeezing the lower and upper water hoses.

So the thermostat ended up leaking again. I changed it out and bled the system and the heater works again. I am still having issues with the cooling fan though. The 1st stage or low speed is not coming on. I cannot find anything on the forum for a r56. Any suggestions?
