R50/53 Mini Cooper Recall
$3000 to fix?
I thought it was simply the seat pad that was poorly designed, and replacing the bottom cover is all that's required.
Is there more to it than that?

Yea, looks like the 1/2005+ Gen 1 crowd which is the near end of the R50 R53 crowd and most of the R52 cars.

What the production date on your MINI ? You can find it in the door jam ( for example 09/02 ) , this is on the driver side rear of the door jam near the door handle closing point.

Looks like January 2005 ( 01/05 )+ Gen 1 R50 Hardtop R53 Hardtop & R52 Convertible MINIs as stated by the article for the recall.

Enter the last 7 of your VIN on RealOEM.com to get your production month/year to find out if you're eligible. If the recall is 01/2005 and up, then there's no reason the dealerships shouldn't cover the costs.

I know the 1/2005+ MINIs Gen 1 had the additional OCC seat sensor put in by law or something.
I have an R52 Convertible that was built before that date and it does not have the seat sensor nor does it have the little passenger airbag warning light in the overhead.

as an example, my 2005 model year r53 was built in November 2004, so no mat....
Mine was produced 07/05, so it looks like I'm affected. However a search on miniusa.com tells me there are no open recalls for my VIN. ??? Maybe the database hasn't been updated yet?
8/2005 here with a failed sensor mat, SRS code 71.
Bought last month, I negotiated my price down by $900 as the previous owner had a quote for that much from an indy shop for replacing the seat bottom to fix it. Guess I got lucky now I get a free fix!
No idea how people are getting quoted up to $3k...the part is like $600...
Mine too, which is why I am going to call the dealership to discuss. If they don't see it on the screen, there is no way they are going to do the work under recall. I plan on showing them the NTB recall letter to cite the issue, but I am pretty sure they will refuse the service until its in the 'system'. How long do you think BMW can delay this from reaching the dealerships?
I've lived with the damn light for awhile, so I can wait ; p

keep in mind there were TWO different versions of the seat mat if i recall....both had longer term issues, most of the first style failing within the first year, 2005...
my suggestion...
be "nice" in dealing with the dealer...many never sold gen1 cars, and have ZERO FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE...so maybe an older dealer might help? either way, you should get a letter if miniusa has your name as the owner of record.
