I am not a fan of trunk/hatch mounted racks, as they grind into the paint. I like the bikes to be on the roof.

MINIMANIA has several different bike racks ... this is the least expensive

your local bike shop probably sells the same thing!

Why not just fold down seats and put bike in the back? Very simple if bike's wheels both have quick release. Nothing to buy, no affect on gas mileage and bike protected from garages and being rear ended.

I did this. It's a Curt hitch w/ a Thule rack. Required a little bumper modification (Mine didn't have the center mesh or the center light)

Fits my 29er without any issues.

My rack

I didn't want to run roof racks due wind noise and blocking my sunroof. I mountain bike a lot and didn't want to leave my bike racks up there full time. So, I can up with this: Bought a receiver that is very stealth and didn't require removal or cutting of the bumper cover to install:

Then measured the spread to center my bikes using the Thule Sidearms (I already have 3). Drew it up and took it to my local welding shop and had this fabricated and powder coated. It works like a charm and I could use them for any other roof rack accessories.
Here it is with one sidearm on it:

I ended up going the Mini Fini route with my R59. I have a write-up here

On my Gen1 Checkmate I used the Saris Bones RS hatch rack. I believe the Bones RS is the rack recommended by Saris for the Mini.

The Bones RS hooks around the bottom of the hatch, and you position supporting pads on the body panel. The rear glass is not touched at all, saving potential breakage and leaving the rear wiper operable.

Like all hatch mounts this rack will scratch the clear coat; but the scratches will buff right out.

I used this 1-2 times a week for the last 8 years.
