R50/53 One ball mod = spot for a spare tire?
One ball mod = spot for a spare tire?
Just curious if anyone that's done the one ball exhaust mod has tried to fabricate a way to secure a spare up where the resonator originally was. Seems to make a lot of sense to me, unless there's just simply not enough room.
If you really feel the need for a spare, there is a mount you can get that will hold one like a Jeep does, but that's just added weight which is a serious hindrance on these cars if you have too much of it..
I prefer to just carry a AAA card in my wallet. Even if I could fit a spare, I don't trust the tiny jacks that come with cars, so I would have a tow guy show up either way anyway. There is a reason they have become commonly nicknamed as "widowmaker" jacks.

With either the supplied scissor jack or the sturdiest floor jack you have, you just
have to assume it may fail and NEVER put yourself in a position where the car can
come down on your person. You need a proper jack stand in proper position if you're
going to be in harm's way. With a little common sense, however, you can very safely
jack it up with the scissor jack to change a tire.

I use the included jack all the time. Just so long as you know how to use it, it's totally fine. To my original question, I've seen in other threads that there are spares with tires in which the sidewall collapses in order to make the stored diameter much smaller than inflated. Has no one tried to secure one of these in place of the resonator? I often drive out through mountainous areas where there is no cell reception, so while I do have AAA, it's not always the solution.

). Compare one of those boxes with the cavity and see where to go from there? With enough fabrication, you can do just about anything, whether it would be worth all the time and cutting is up to you and your wallet. Might be as simple as a retrofit to an offset exhaust in order to clear the area for the spare, but it also might be as intricate as cutting up and relocating the battery bay, exhaust, etc.

Wish I could answer directly to the oneball location however I haven't attempted such a task, and am not in a position to jacking up and measuring out the cavity at the moment, but now you have me curious as well.
By looking at the picture you can see how tight the space is even with an offset exhaust, you might be able to fit one of the collapsible sidewall spares with the stock exhaust, but you also have to be able to protect it from the exhaust heat to be worthwhile.
But as I mentioned earlier, you can always get the setup to a have rear mounted spare that is similar to jeeps if keeping one with you is of much concern.
I was curious about that as well - I have a Ireland Engineering exhaust ready to go on and was thinking if I could cut through some of the rear floor, maybe just a half circle to set the spare in a little, vertically. Forgot about the battery being in the way.
For TSDs I just strap the tire in the back; but then there's only the one seat for my 3 kids to fight over...lol.
