My R56 Plasti Dip wheel thread
My R56 Plasti Dip wheel thread
I researched and researched the process until I finally felt comfortable/confident enough to do it myself. My thought now about the process it that it is easy but tedious. I wanted to do it right the first time around, I wanted it to be professional looking and I it is. ;-)
I took pictures along the way to help others, I hope it helps at least one person ;-)
I planned to do it with the wheels on the car however I found it extremely difficult to clean all the years of road grime without removing the wheel.
I purchased 5 cans of Vintage gold Plasti Dip from https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php
3 cans would have been fine. I put on 6 medium-thick coats on each wheel.
Here is the wheel uncleaned:

Cleaned:

I dried the wheel thoroughly, popped the center cap out (I pushed it gently from the back side) and put a thick coat of tire shine on the tire.

I put index cards in between the tire & wheel.

And put masking tape around the valve stem making sure the tape didnt touch the wheel.

Here is the 1st coat. I held the can about 6-8" away and sprayed evenly with left to right motions keeping the spray on the entire time. (This was my second wheel which is why the index cards have a lot of paint on them)

I waited about 10-13 minutes in between coats, by coat 3 it looked great, however I still put 3 more coats on just to make sure that it peels off easily as I know I will be removing it down the road.
I am debating between adding the glossifier, I am going to see how I like it currently before ordering it.
Here is a snap of each coat:

And Here is the comparison of the silver versus gold:

I will add a finished product picture in a little bit, the last wheel is drying.

Thank you, they came out really well.
The only mistake I made is the second wheel I did I didn't put enough dip on and a rock chipped it. I'll need to re do that one.
I found it nearly impossible to fully clean the wheels without removing them, the back sides were caked. I used Simple Green, a sponge and water.
1. Doused it in Simple Green
2. Scrubbed
3. Rinse
4. Repeat 3-4 times per wheel
5. Dry with microfiber cloth getting the last little bit off.
I've bummed into people who have had their wheels dipped for 5 years without wear signs, I like the dip but ultimately with get the wheels powder coated. The dip was more to see if I lied the color.
