Thinking of upgrading to Enkei PF01 / 17" wheels but unsure of the correct offset for my R53 ?

Tire Rack recommends the 17x7 Enkei Racing PF01 with ET45.

 

Assuming you have stock suspension and 2002-2006 Cooper S hardtop.

Enkei Racing PF01 in 17x7" has an offset of 45mm which is nearly OEM, you'll need to ask for a set of centering rings to use to fit the MINI's 56.1mm hub bore. Check with the vendor, tirerack will provide the plastic rings to fit at no additional cost.

The PF01 in 17x7" with 4x100 bolt pattern also comes with offset of 38mm which will make the wheel stick out by 7mm more than when offset is 45mm.

Compared to OEM wheels the 38mm offset pokes out 13mm more or about 1/2". some owners like the wheels to stick out and be closer to flush, take your pick.

 

Go with the 38. It will look nicer. I bought the 16x7 +43 Pf01s but still wasn't really happy with the offset. Added some 8mm spacers (making it +35) and it looks alot better.

If you want a stock look go for the 45, but 38 will fill the fenders out bit nicer and give a sportier stance.

Tirerack stocks the 45 offset wheels to match OEM fitment.

Both offsets will work with stock suspension, your choice. No real difference in performance, slight potential difference in wheel weight due to different wheel spoke design for the offsets.

Not having to run wheel spacers is preferable, plus you can use the stock wheel bolts. Wheel spacers may need longer wheel bolts or change to long wheel studs.

 

So does the +38 stick out more as far as the spokes past the wheel lip - compared to the +45 ??

 

No, that is not how wheel offset works.

If the wheel is 7" wide then a 205mm wide tire will fit correctly and the spokes will not stick out (at all). If you are using a very wide rim and a narrow stretch fit tire then yes, the rim edge can stick out, usually the spokes don't stick out.

MINI wheels have negative offset. The larger the number the more the wheel is located towards the inner suspension.

 

Honesty the RF01 and PF01 Enkeis are soo overdone on MINIs, half of the forum run these. I get it, they are a good light wheel but MINIs should be customized.

 

I understand how off set works, but what I am questioning is the design of the PF01 wheel itself.

Do the spokes and center of the wheels extend beyond the lip of the wheel; its hard to find a photo that reflects this view.

Also, some comments we're made that the +38 may weigh slightly more due to the design; how does this wheel design differ from the +45 that causes this ?

At $265 each I want to make sure this is the wheel I am looking for to have on my Mini.

Also, how do these wheels stand up to normal street driving, not including large pot holes that can ruin any wheel.

I think it's a really nice wheel. Light and stronger than regular cast and not nearly
as pricey as forged. The OZ Alleggerita HLT fits into this category as well.
