Advice from the seaonsed user(s) requested.

Hello all.

While getting ready to order another filter so I can swap out during filter cleaning, I'm began wondering what would be an exact match for my newly purchased K&N CAI but in DRY media?

I've read soooo many horror stories about over oiling it makes me wanna just buy a replacement oiled filter vs oiling it myself. I figure at 25-30k miles I could spring $50 and just toss the old one out.

Zippy doesn't travel through dusty conditions at all. She's always on paved streets and highways. In fact, I have an aFe dry drop-in filter which I removed when I installed my CAI and the thing looks brand spanking new still.

So what's your take on oil vs. dry in ALL regards. Any advice for this new member to the K&N CAI family?

Regards,
David

technically oiled is better, since the oil traps all the dust and particles entering in, where as the dry filter has to have a denser foam to trap. if properly oiled you will get better performance, how much more? not noticeable.

but over oiled can mess up sensors down stream. I prefer the oiled, they are easier to clean. I have oiled in my car and both my bikes, and my 3rd bike will have one as well. although carb bikes don't care at all. a dry filter will not give you any issues, although try to stay away from back, harder to see all the crap that's in the filter.

if you do get oiled, the directions weren't that clear. but this is what I do:
1.) Hose Filter from the inside
2.) Squeeze filter and repeat 5-6 times
3.) Use the K&N cleaner on inside and out (youll be surprised how much more comes out)
4.) Hose off
5.) Lightly spray whole filter
6.) Squeeze filter around to move the oil around
7.) Let sit for a couple hours
8.) Lightly tap outside with a paper towel to remove any excess
9.) Lightly tap inside with paper towel to remove any excess
10.) install
11.) wash hands
12.) motor on for the next couple years

(lightly tap, tapping so light that the foam does not move, for cotton filters, just brushing against)

I have yet to do my car filter, its only been on the car for a year and half. the sport bike gets done every year, dirtbike is every year or as needed. the sportbike is done every year only because its a ram air, and collects a bunch of wildlife. dirtbike sees the dirt. the mini, mine being first gen doesn't seem to get a lot of crap near the intake, 2nd gen im sure is about the same. less needed cleanings. but always helpful to check

Awesome and very informative post Saltysalt. However, I'm against the fence with just a few items you have listed (see above)

I certain I can't "squeeze" my filter. Unless I'm missing something, it's a canister and can't be done. Also, for items 8-9 do you mean "dab" lightly with paper towel to remove any excess oil?

I did notice when I opened my K&N for the first time, there's a slight oil film (barely noticeable) on the plastic encasing. I hope K&N didn't "over-oil" this one because I've had it on for two days now. YIKES!

An oiled filter is good for nearly 100,000 miles BETWEEN CLEANINGS...
If you lived in a dusty place maybe 50,000-70,000....
Just saying...going a bit OCD on the air filter on a new car...
And overoiled WILL cause problems with sensors.....and MOST folks over oil when cleaning.... So a big warning...
On most modern cars, I would suggest a DRY filter.
And one filter is fine....take it out, clean it...let it dry overnight...then in the am, oil (if needed) and reinstall...oiled filters are goof for about 10 cleanings...hense the 1,000,000 warrenty...

Good advise Zippy.

Here's my AFE drop in filter ordered several months ago. Never cleaned and note how it's holding out. Practically brand new still.

Here's Zippy cruising on her way home. The air-like sound is not her - it's the pavement. However, if you turn your volume up slightly you can hear the nice deem hummmmmmm.

Live the upgrade. Hope MINI doesn't decide to not maintenance or warranty my car because if it. :(

is it a cone filter? paper or foam? cause papers you cant squeeze, so just water pressure will do. usually foams have a structure on the inside you can pull out. K&N will not over oil form factory, just oil gets everywhere, perfectly normal. 1 drop goes along way. when you oil yours, its a very thin oil, itll be all over your hands

and yes dab!

then you should be good for a few years of driving

Yes it's a cone filter. Here she is on our way home from Friday date night. To much traffic but you "may" be able to hear the throttle a tad.
