Wife killed the mini....

....or gave it a damn good shot, at any rate.

Ground a curb like she was tony hawk. Wheels are curbed to hell and back, something broken in the front suspension. All that is no big deal, but the passenger side curtain airbag deployed.

Anyone on here familiar with airbag replacement costs, or whether its even feasible? Im guessing the airbag deployment-automatical total as far as insurance is confirmed, given 2002 Cooper S with 90k miles.

Yeah the insurance might total the car if you make a claim. You could repair it yourself but generally there are airbag modules that need to be replaced and not just the airbag itself. You'd have to do some research. Way Motor Works parts out cars. Might have the stuff you're looking for.

We have multiple sets of used side curtain airbags for sale. Give us a call if you're interested in them.

The suspension damage could possibly end up costing you more than the purchase and installation of used airbags. Until you have the car on a hoist or fully inspected you won't know what the extent of the damage is.

Nick,

Not sure how to ask this question... but if something like this or any repair involving the deployment of airbags does the repair shop both indie or at the dealership required, by law, to report it whoever that will show up in the CARFAX once it's ran?

Thanks!

jg

I got my car through a family friend who sells used cars. He picked it up at auction, as it was being sold off as an insurance write off. Even though the car was low mileage and in great shape, it was in a very minor front end collision which happened to trigger the airbags. I was told the air bags being deployed was the reason it was being sold as a write off.

did it come with a salvage title? or maybe it depends on which state it was auctioned?

Shady things happen everyday - car fax is only as good as the reported information they gather...I don't know if they are legally required to report to car fax as car fax is a private entity. Reporting to the motor vehicle database...maybe. Police report will find it's way to car fax eventually. If your airbag deploys typically you sent gonna drive Away from the accident.

Airbag work is not hard. Did it blow out the seats too? My mini was hit on the freeway and it sent me into a spin. The impact blew my side airbags. In insurance gave me $8500. And I bought the car back for$1500. I bought used airbags off ebay, installed them then drove to a local bmw mechanic to clear the code. At a local yard I found a headliner and the interior was good as new. You can do it. It really is not hard.

Yep, the seat as well as the curtain airbag deployed.

Insurance appraiser comes out today, lets see what transpires.

5k in damages, car is close to a total but the vote is to fix it unless other issues crop up when the teardown happens.
