So it looks like my work is finally going to free up some time for me to work on my '05 R53. I was wondering if there is a break down of what tools I should make sure I have for doing basic maintenance as well as the clutch/flywheel replacement I will be doing. I am mainly looking for help with MINI specific tools as my garage is decently stocked from my Honda days. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I suggest you get a Bentley manual for a Mini, that will help you in preparing for any upcoming maintenance projects. It talks about the tools needed for each project. One of the best manuals around for the Mini.

Assuming you already have the air tools and torque wrench...

+1 on the Bentley and the belt tensioner.
The brake caliper compressor needs to rotate when it compresses (not all do that - not sure about the set you may have for the honda)

The clutch job will require a few others tools: There's a specific torx bit (male) and you should get a clutch alignment tool.

The Passenger side engine mount has another torx bit (also male if memory serves correct)

You may want a 21 or 22 mm socket (modified with a dremmel) with a side opening for the front suspension strut nut or you can buy one, BMW#31 2 210

A Spring Compressor

There are a few BMW specific tools (expensive) that may help with front suspension work. Some generic ones may work as well.

BMW Ball Joint Separator BMW# 31 2 240
BMW Specific 24mm, 27mm and 31mm openings: http://www.kochtools.com/index.php?p=product&id=183
Universal 23mm opening: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...er=1779-1-M970

BMW Control arm removal and installation tool BMW# 31 5 140

Look on Pelican's website, they have very good technical articles for the R53as well:

Other tips:
  • Get a big-**** can of PB-Blaster and soak the parts you want a few days ahead (especially suspension parts).
  • Go to Real OEM and find the little connectors, plastic rivet plug things (inner wheel well) and clips & screws that are under the front bumper. You'll likely need to replace them as they get used & destroyed.

Happy Wrenching!
