Dealer Prep

Hi

I was scheduled to pickup my MINI today, but I just got a call from my dealer saying that the car may not be ready today, as they have to do some "programming" to the car. I told her I would take the vehicle with the default programming (programmable options, ie driving lights, etc) since I am renting, and I don't want to pay for another day.

She said that is not the programming they need to do, "they need to program it so that it's street ready..."

Is this accurate? What does the dealer prep mean? I thought it was to wash the car, check all fluids and the like.

Thanks,
Nando

They also update the engine management to newest software. Or they've identified an older version on your car and need to update it to fix a known issue.

That's what it sounds like to me.

Or they are just backed up in their service dept. and aren't flexible enough to get you your car without going through all of their normal steps. Ours was supposed to be done by noon and wasn't actually ready until 7:00 that night. The dealer did pay for a nice lunch out for us because of the delay. That being said, I wouldn't want them to rush through their checks and miss something that might require a return/warranty trip to the dealer. Cheers,

Nando,

Bummer! It sounds like service back up to me too. Programming is such a quickie job one can't imagine it would take more than an hour or two.

Since we were on the Turandot too, I'm thinking that Bagheera should be at the dealer in time for our 7/16 arrival. Julie @Classic said it was awaiting transport.

Congrats on getting your car. Hopefully it will be today.

The most difficult part of the whole waiting period is the last few days. Let them take their time and do it right, it will be worth it. I reccomend buying a few nice gifts for your new arrival. Antenna ball, Mr Clean Auto wash, something to occupy your time.

Just make sure they aren't taking this time to try and figure out how to charge more for some kind of "dealer prep". Dealer prep is ALWAYS included in the MSRP no manner what they say. Any additional changes are just a way to increase profit.

The things I end up wanting to buy for the car are like a new Ipod, driving lights, seat covers...big ticket items. I think once I get the car, the spending urge will go away.

Anyway, it is confirmed, I can pick up tomorrow... 24 hours to go.... I had a nice date planned with my wife, pick her up at work, drive up to Westchester county for dinner (from Manhattan), go thru that twisty Saw Mill Parkway...some of you know what I am talking about.

look out!

Last time I drove the Saw Mill Parkway it had potholes big enough to engulf a MC! Hope they worked on it a little....
