04 R50 manual trannny noise

I am a new Mini owner in the Denver area and have a base 04 Mini with the 5 speed. Just starting to go through it and bought it with a growling tranny that sounds like a bearing. Anyone have a good idea if this is the case? Where's the best place to have this diagnosed and repaired? I am thinking of removing the tranny myself and taking it to a rebuild shop. Any thoughts, suggestions and recommendations?

Is the before July/2004 (Midlands) or after July/2004 (Getrag) build date?

I will have to check the build date. Do you have an opinion for both in the meantime? Thanks!

For your rebuild, Ferney's and/or Peak Eurosport in Westminster.

A new place in Broomfield called AutoSportWerks has MINI service in their flyers/advertising, but I have not used them, might give them a look over in a week or so to see what they can do on MINIs.

Otherwise, you have two dealers who have trained MINI staff, they might take on a drop off type work.

We at Ferney's lube and auto repair will be more than happy to inspect your Trans issue for you.In most cases the Trans can't be rebuilt due to the lack of parts available. The Grinding noise you are hearing is most likely the differential within the trans going bad. Please feel free to give us a call if you have any questions..

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Erik- the problem is more or an ever-increasing whine only when the tranny is in gear. Sound like a diff? Or a bearing?

This is Ferney answering through Melissa (my wife). It is hard to say without knowing a bit more about what is going on. Do you hear the noise more in a certain gear, or is it only when you engage first gear to get the car moving?

However, if the clutch is not slipping, most likely it is the transmission.

From what you have had said here, that is what it sounds like to me, but I would have to have a look at the car to be sure. Feel free to give us a call at any time if we can be of help.
