R50/53 On the R53
On the R53
I have owned (list truncated to relevant cars):
2006 Lotus Exige, fully optioned, with aftermarket supercharger
2003 Red/Red R53 (MODDED!)
2005 Silver/black leather E46 M3 (light motor and chassis mods)
2004 Mystic Blue/grey leather E46 M3 (moderate chassis mods)
Guess which won, I sold and missed terribly, bought back, then kept modding?
The R53 is just right, as in correct and perfect. It's colossal fun. It's also visually the only version of the BMW-era Cooper that is designed as it should be. Subsequent "MINI" models are to me approximations of the original or just plain not in any way "MINI." In my opinion, the brand should now be called "MAXI." Or maybe "BIGI."
I bought my agonized-for-3-months-on-the-MINI-configurator 2003 new. I modded it until I was satisfied. I sold it and the Exige because I convinced myself that somehow the cars weren't necessary in a garage with an E46 M3. But ultimately, the R53 turned out to be the necessary one. It's like that scene in Weird Science where the nerdy protagonists ditch the hotness of Kelly LeBrock (circa-1986-hot!) for the girls that were really right for each of them.
Sorry, Kelly. I married the girl next door. She's a petit Brit who makes me laugh and does all those things I like. Whenever I like...
