Now that all four spark plugs are resting snugly in the head again, I'm starting to attend to smaller issues on my recently purchased '03 MCS. First on the list is this problem with the AC blower fan.

When I bought the car, the AC blower fan would blow more or less air at me based on how many bars I selected in the AC control. But recently the blower fan goes on full blast no matter how many bars I select. (Unless I turn it off, of course - in which case the fan goes completely off.) This is a frustrating, and noisy, problem.

I have the IHKA automatic climate control. The fan rocker switch seems responsive, and shows from one to eight fan bars being added and subtracted on the display as I press the rocker. So I'm guessing the trouble is the IHKA blower resistor.

Does it make sense that the resistor is at fault? Is there anything else I'm overlooking or should check before replacing the resistor?

 

Yeah sounds like a resistor. It is what varies the speed of the blower.

 

Well, this is crummy. My 2003 MCS was built 9/02, and does not have the conveniently replaceable resistor on the passenger side (with access by removing the glove box).

Apparently the early cars didn't have a separate external resistor - instead it's integrated into the blower fan itself. In order to replace it, it looks like I'm going to have to remove the entire center dash console and empty the ac system.

Anyone have any experience with this, or know of a link to a good tutorial?

 

Check your cabin air filter as well. You may find it's gummed up.

 

If you have it set on a Temp in the auto AC mode and the AC is trying to cool the car down it will stay on high if the interior is very hot. Have you tried it in manual mode ?

I would check the cabin filter and make sure that its not blocked and the Fan is fighting to cool the car. They can get really bad.

The cabin air filter was the first thing I checked. It's surprisingly clean.

Also, I've definitely been testing it in manual mode. It only blows full blast, not matter what mode, temp, or fan setting I select.

So it definitely seems like I need to replace the whole blower assembly, because the resistor isn't separate in my car. I'm not looking forward to it. Anyone got any tips for doing this?

I read that thread in my research. It seems to be the only description of the procedure out there - but it's a bit vague. I tried to contact the author, but his account doesn't accept private messages.

At this point, I'm not sure it's worth it to pull the car apart just to fix this.
