Hi all,

This is my first post, and I really need help. My 2007 R56 Mini Cooper (non-S) has engine error code P0301, ignition coil 1 misfire. I pulled out the ignition coil 1 and noticed there were engine oil in the cylinder, so I ended up changing the valve cover gasket, no biggie. Now I need to order a new coil. I went to AutoZone website, but it says 2007 has 1.6L SFI and SFI SOHC, 2 different types, with 2 different part# ignition coils. So I really don't know which engine do I have and there's nowhere I can find engine information in the user manual, or under the hood. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

But it looks like it has been replaced by the one used in the later R56N models.

 

Go to here: http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html

and enter the last 7 of ur VIN. This will tell you the type of engine that you have.

The main confusion in auto parts stores are the fact that the cabrio (r52)..is a gen1 holdover, was in production till 2008 with the earlier tritec motor with both s and non s versions having both supercharged and normal aspirated versions........
And the r56 gen2 (2007+) was in production at the same time in s and non s with the pugoet derived motor.....
But the parts book do not make the split in many cases...so folks ask for a s or non s part...and sometimes 2 are shown for each version....
So one good tip ..
Go to realoem.com....
And enter your car by production date or Vin...
And go through the systems....you can get the OEM part number....this number is usually cross referenced in all the auto parts stores....
One tip...
On other cars I have had TERRIBLE luck with auto parts coils....with some "lifetime" or 2 year warrenty units lasting 3000--12000 miles.....cheap Chinese junk....while the OEM USA/Japan parts go 200,000 miles before failing..... I have found you can get OEM coils online for most cars for about the same price or slightly less than the auto parts stores own brand or the "standard" brand if you can wait a couple days for shipping...heck lastime I bought denso oem coils (on a Toyota), they were $10 CHEAPER on rockauto than the "durabrand" auto zone lifetime units that were failing every 4 months.....

That oil you mentioned being in the cylinder, it's moisture that gathers around the coil near the spark plug. Every time I remove my coils I always see that blackened moisture surround the plugs, need not worry.

However, it is weird that only cylinder 1 has oil in it, but rest of them were all clean. I cleaned it up, and took it for a short ride hoping it would solve the problem. Unfortunately, it remained the same, plus new oil leak into cylinder 1. Then I decided to change the gasket....

 

I forgot to mention that for some strange reason I don't have the black moisture around all my plugs either, just two. I believe it to be that the rubber on the coil isn't sealing. Perhaps it's time to replace them a 54K.
