email from MA @ MoHI

Aloha All,

This is what I was sent by one of the best MA's at MoHI:

oin us for our Fourth of July Freedom Rally!

When: The Fourth of July!

Meeting Place: MINI of Hawaii

Arrival Time: 8:00 am

Depart: 9:00 am

Destination: The Poamoho Estate overlooking beautiful Waialua

The rally will begin at MINI of Hawaii, motoring through the Pali highway, onto H-3 with a break overlooking Kaneohe Bay, down H-1, north on H-2 , and cruising the curvaceous "803" Kaukonahua Road.

(A detailed map will be provided at the start of the rally).

Our final destination will be the spacious Poamoho Estates, graciously hosted by MINI Cooper owners Bernie and Tina. Located on the the sunny hillside of Waialua, this gorgeous property overlooks the beautiful North Shore. With a panaramic view of Kaena Point to Pupukea, it will be a picture perfect picnic day! We will provide hot dogs & refreshments for your enjoyment.

Please R.S.V.P to receptionist@MINIhawaii.com or (removed by HawaiEE).

LET'S RALLY!

If it weren't for autocross, I might go on this cruise. As it is, I have driven Kaukonahua many, many times (used to live on North Shore, although that was waaaay before Lucy) so I don't feel too bad about missing it. I do feel bad about not seeing an "estate" though, especially on North Shore.

It seems to be an "invited only" cruise again so many of us our "out" anyways. Lucky we got auto-x to help us keep the MINI spirit alive.

Sorry, Billy Lane and Indian Larry at the Choppers Only Hawaii show take precedence that day. As fun as MINIs are, bikes are in a class by themselves.

Billy Lane and I are going to get married one day, he just doesn't know it yet. One of my best friends actually knows him pretty well and says he's super cool! Anyway, I helped the sponsors of that show book the reservations for all of the judges, so I know where to find them....

Sorry....back to the point of the thread....

oh wait...one more thing....I LOVE STREET BIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Kaukonahua that twisty road going up to North Shore - the one that is not Kam Hwy? I never got around to learning the name of that road, I just knew it was long and started with a K (and again, not Kam ).

I ask, because I was listening to a traffic report a few days ago, and they mentioned Kaukonahua somewhere downtown, and I was like - but I thought that was on North Shore?! Can anyone shed some light on this road mystery?

Yes, I believe that is Kaukonahua Road. It is the one with lots of traffic fatalities, so driver carefully!

Yeah, I know. I used to drive that road a lot (in 1996) and saw some really crazy stuff. What a road - lots of blind curves, AND big trees butting up against the pavement, AND a steep incline, AND a thousand foot cliff, AND spectacular ocean and mountain views, and people go nuts.

Several years ago, a coworker of mine was in a car accident on that road. He was a passenger, and the driver was killed. Either they were both drunk, or the driver was drunk and the passenger was sober, I don't remember. Or perhaps they were stoned (active duty, too). Crazy people.

However ... when crazy people aren't making Kaukonahua dangerous, it sure is fun to drive, although those mountain and ocean views are terribly distracting. It would be nice if there were a few scenic overlook places where you could pull over safely and enjoy the views. I've always wanted to pull over and check out that 1000 ft cliff, but I'm not quite sure where it is safe to do so. The shoulders aren't paved and most accessible off-road-ish areas look like they could easily scrape off some stuff from the bottom of any car. Ah well - that's North Shore for you!

I just got home from the rally. It was lots of fun...about 24 MINIs showed up. Here's some pics from one of the stops.

You do know it is illegal to park along the road in such a manner if it is not an emergency.

uhmmm...at least, now we know.
good thing there's no cops checking on this thread, right?

if so, at least nobody's license plates are showing. good pics and even better angle planning, keiki.

as for the two ladies in the pics, you just happened to be there, right? wrong place at the wrong time.

kbseto...I felt bad about asking them to move, so I took the pic with the two gals in it anyway. Hey...it was fun driving back with you (and southseasadie for a while)...btw, how in the world do you drive with your window down on the freeway...i tried it and my hair was dredlocked by the time I got home!

tech-gi...it was great meeting you out there yesterday!

here's one more pic from me....not that good resolution, though:

Were you taking pics and driving? Shame on YOU! I've seen you drive and you should have BOTH hands on the wheel!

Don't you know Kyle has short hair? That's how he can drive with the windows down. Another thing that's bad about driving with windows down is it makes it difficult to smoke and drive as the ash goes flying all over the place.

Doesn't really matter if you guys were safely off the road because cops will still hassle you, especially if you are in an organized caravan.

beastmaster, we were at the stop light when I busted out my camera. The reason why it looks like we were moving was because by the time my camera turned on, the group in front of me started to move forward.

mini-t...only you would know since I was with you on saturday night...

taking pictures of our cars, that is!
