R60 How does All4 work?
How does All4 work?
Does anybody have any detail on the All4 system? Is it a permanent AWD system or it is one of those reaction based AWD system where it is FWD until the sensors call for the rear wheels to kick in? To owners of the All4 system, how is the traction in the snow and rain?
Thank you
Thank you
There's a bunch of threads on here if you search, but basically:
1. Starts out AWD
2. Shifts more power to front wheels as speed increases, (up to 100%?)
3. Shifts power to back wheels when it detects slip, up to 50%
I think it handles fantastically in the rain and snow, though for snow I'd strongly recommend dedicated winter tires vs all seasons.

Works Really Well
I miss the torque steer and tire spinning of my old Clubby very rarely. The Clubby would really spin on wet starts. The All4 is simply glued to road, I find myself powering into a wet curve the same as I do a dry. We had some snow here in the South and she performed quite well on 19" run flats. For the rare snow here I didn't swap tires set winter.

The level of snow in your area makes a difference, so take that into consideration. Living in Albuquerque where we got an occasional dusting, the all seasons were fine. When I went on ski trips in Colorado, on the other hand, I found myself wishing I had dedicated winter tires. It still did fine, and I didn't feel unsafe or anything, just a little sliding here and there.
Now I live in Florida where the All4 is very underutilized.

All4 in snow
Having owned many all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vehicles, my CM is one of the best in the snow.
I use 17" Michelin x-ice snows, for last 3 years. Tires are great and much quieter than my Michelin summer 18" non run flats. Car is very nimble with lots of power. Not great ground clearance, but a great snow vehicle.

The ground clearance on the CM is 6.3" I believe. Do you most of find that to be high enough for snow driving in the city?

We get a fair bit of snow here in southern Ontario and i had absolutely no problem this past winter navigating around in my base Countryman with dedicated winter tires. If the ALL4 is better than the 2wd CM then it must be very good in the snow.
