I KILLED my car... with the help of NCS EXPERT

2007 Cooper S R56
ive tried everything i read on here about coding back to default and it just wont work. i think i screwed with the kombi ecu a bit in ncs dummy, exported the file, processed it and now the car wont even start and gives weird warning lights on the tach that ive never seen before, as if they are for a different car. fuel gauge lights are gone, tacho was dead when the car was turning on earlier. i think i may have done something with the transponder coding.

i dont know what im doing and im at a loss for words.

the car literally just wont do anything.

i can get it into accessory mode and code more, but it wont reset to default (unchecked manipulate file / cleared MAN and TRC files)
and now it wont start at all. i can tell its the transponder kicking me out.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Relax, if all else fails you can always tow it to the dealer and they'll fix it.

Now, did you not save an original .trc file before you started?

I might have the original nettodata trace file. I tried using it with no luck.
It might not even be the original, I'm not sure.
Tow to the dealer is the only way?
I would like to avoid that if at all possible.

That whole situation sucks and I can't offer any assistance sadly. However, I found this a little amusing. If you didn't save the original config, this may be your only option and it may cost you a pretty penny to fix.

also, shouldn't ncs be able to know what options i have based on the VIN?
I thought that was the whole point of the erasing the MAN files trick. (which doesn't work for me)

Sorry to hear this and I know that you're not too keen on going to the dealer but just to give you an idea, it will cost approx. $200 to reload everything back to OEM specs by the dealer. I asked my SA about this. Again, just a distant second option if it continues to fail to start.

i am only near one dealer, and i have never walked out of there with a bill that small, regardless of how minute the issue was. that's my real reluctance. not to mention, the tow alone would probably be another 300-400 and honestly, i really cannot afford it right now. i've been dealing with major family and pet health problems all month. it just seems to get worse and worse for me. i have no one but myself to blame.
if anyone can help at all or walk me through it, i will gladly share my contact info. i can also use team viewer so you can take over my screen.

Is this the trc file that you read from the kombi module? And is the kombi module the only one that you have played with?

Have you tried defaulting the whole car?

yea, i think that was either right before or right after i exported a TRC file from NCS dummy after playing with the kombi selections.
i only played with kombi stuff im pretty sure. and i remember it asks if i wanted to clear some file upon exit and i hit cancel.
but afterwards when i tried to do the clean MAN files default, i tried to default all the ECUs

also, i have a 2007 cooper hardtop here with pretty much similar options. would it be worth a try to get some coding from this car and transfer it to the cooper S or am I just asking for more trouble that way?

What datens are you using? I'd suggest to update to the newest and try again.

I would not use files from another car.

I'm on mobile right now so I can't give you the link, but search for r60 coding, there is a link for datens 51.4 or something close to that.

For others that read this thread, the first thing to do is read and save all trc and nettodata files for each module. Keep these in a safe, well labeled place, that way you can always go back.

???

I forget the exact procedure for updating datens. Yes, each module generates it own specific trc and nettodata file.

I am using v45.

well it can't get any worse at this point.
ill try changing all my daten files to the v45 versions
and try to reset after i do that.

i really thought there was a way to go back to default without having saved any backups. something to do with the VIN# and original VO it makes the first time you plug it in. maybe i was wrong?

Your right, theoretically it should default back by reading your VO, but maybe not if you use the wrong datens.

Hopefully using updated datens will work.

I chickened and had bimcoding.com do some coding on my R60. They can do remote coding; maybe they can help you.

Trust me - you have not "killed" your car or any of the ECUs in it. You CAN undo the trouble and you do not need any of the original trace files to do so.

Your problem is simply that the daten files that you used are too old for your car. It if has ever been to a dealer it likely has newer firmware than 2007. What happens then is that NCS Expert uses out-of-date configuration information in the daten files which the newer firmware in the modules doesn't understand - and you get the problems you're experiencing.

All you need to do is update your NCS Expert with newer datens and then "default" the modules (either code the module with a blank FSW_PSW.MAN file, or turn off trace file manipulation in NCS Expert). This will tell NCS Expert to load the correct, default configuration defined by the updated daten files into the module.

I'll send a PM with more info that may help out.

not yet. Chernobyl is simply an amazing member however and is trying to take me through the process.
battery is dead now due to all the time spent with the ignition on and car not running so im charging it now.
i will continue to try to follow his steps once i get the car charged again, as i really dont want to mess around while the car has low voltage.

if/when this gets resolved, i will be sure to write a follow up so current and future members won't have to go through what I have gone through.

thanks.

Sounds promising! I was considering tinkering with NCS EXPERT but this post has put the fear of God in me and I'm a little apprehensive. Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

The car is back from the dead!
Thanks to none other than Chernobyl.
What an outstanding member, I cannot say enough.
He took the time and energy to walk me through this step by step and offered me the right software, instructions, and patience that this needed.

It is members like him that really make a community like this thrive.

So guys, if you have the same issue in the future, let me know and I will pass on his wisdom so you are not all flooding his PM box now

Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH CHERNOBYL!!!!
