R53 Speed Indicator

Hey Guys

I recently purchased a 2005 MCS with Nav. Center console is the NAV, dials behind the steering wheel are Revs and Speed (left and right respectively).

As a tall guy in a MINI, its tough for me to glance down and see my speed as its usually hidden behind the steering wheel - especially at high speed as those numbers are always hidden. Is there any way to display it elsewhere on the center console "computer" or LCD in the dials behind the steering wheel? I've seen this on a newer Gen 2 MINI, but not been able to find a way to do it on my GEN 1

Maybe I'm outta luck, or should remove some ribs and spine

When I was originally shopping for my R53, I really wanted the chrono package - until I sat behind one.
As you mentioned, being tall I couldn't see the speed.

Fortunately - if you have the On Board Computer (OBC) you may have the ability to have the tach readout the speed in the LED display (my 05 does, but I don't have the chrono/nav package)

To tell, look at your lights turn stalk (the one on the left) if there's a little button on top that's your OBC toggle button. Give it a few presses to see what happens

if you have BMW coding setup (NCSexpert, cable, XP machine etc) , you can code it, so it will display digital speed on the little LCD display. I did it and I have digital speed as one of the option when I press the little bc switch.
if you or a buddy of you have the coding set up, let me know I can tell you the line to modify

Not sure if it helps but my 05 mcs has the speed in the obc display, I thought all facelift a had this feature. Maybe not since you have the speedo on the steering wheel already.

Go to the on board computer area in the nav screen it will show you speed. I would suggest tilting your steering wheel all the way up if you haven't already. This give you a better angle to the top of the gauges.

Yeah OBC doesn't have it at all, either on the LCD or the big middle screen where the nav is. Looks like my only hope is to tilt the steering wheel as far as possible :(

I don't have anyone that can do the hackery either unfortunately.

the setup is little different for the models with Navigation.
digital speed option is there, but disabled by default.

Here is a picture from my car. I enabled it using NCSexpert.
PM me if you are in the LA area, I can enable it for you.

Go to onboard computer, set speed limit, then click on the speedometer icon. Your current speed will show up. Not the best since you can't use your navigation while in this screen.

Or like I said steering wheel all the way up and seat all the way down. Or you can learn To read your KM/HR.
