Difficult to get into reverse

As I continue to catch up on maintenance and fix odds and ends things on my GF's 2003 Mini (non S) I struggle to get into reverse a fair bit. If i have ever had a struggle with this in other cars I would just go into 1st let the clutch out enough for the it to engage then I am able to shift right into reverse. Not with her car though. Is there anyone else having a similar issue? This a simple linkage adjustment? Different trick to getting it into reverse?

car in question

Check the cables , sounds like 5 speed Midlands transmission, I take its a manual.

For the cables #6 and #7 hook into the shiftier box and then above the transmission on number 11. they might be worn out. In reverse its to the right and back. Think there is no rear synchro for the reverse so it takes a moment or two., take it easy.

Still does not work, check those cables. You can access the cables by pulling up the airbox on the driver side and the cables are on top. Snap into the box and then the ball rods.

For the cables you will need the last 7 digits of the VIN and then then condition A or condition B shift box. Pull up the shift boot and the ring on the center console an, it snaps up, and look at the top of the shifter, use pic above. Does it have condition A ( three support slopes ) or condition B ( Wedge black surface) ?

Thanks
